Any trappers here?

I would caution against using poison because so many animals would eat a dead squirrel if they found it. Collateral damage is bad thing and should be avoided, (if possible).

Just got off the phone with the service dept. at the farm store. It would appear that the mice or squirrels ate through a bunch of the wiring of my riding mower.... :fire:
DEATH to all VERMIN!!!! :cuss:

Knowledge of wildlife behavior is quite possibly more important to a trapper than a hunter. A trapper has to figure out where an animal will be. Many hunters only know where an animal is.

Some bum-rapping comes mostly from ignorance.

Well, I finally got my hand in a 110 Conibear a few days ago.
I had it half set and reached down to set the trigger when somebody let out a blood curdling scream right behind me from the street.

I jerked back to see what was going on and the 110 jumped up and got my right thumb from about 1/2 cock.

Eeeeeooowwww!

So then I'm in a trap and didn't have enough strength to release it with my left hand.
Finally was able to stand on the spring and get it open enough to get out of it after 2-3 minutes!
Hurt like heck for an hour or two, but didn't break it.

The 'Blood Curdling Scream' turned out to be two kids walking down the street playing grab ass right behind my truck!!

Anyway, I am putting a trap safety on after using the tongs now before even getting a hand close to them.

Not saying what the squirrel vs trap score is now.
But the traps are Way ahead of the game, like 45-0.
And they are still coming!

That's what that piece of rope is in your pocket for. Since you guys back that way insist on carrying pen knives for hunting, and you probably didn't have that either, you likely could have gnawed that thumb off before bed time, I'd guess, or at least by midnight. A Buck General along and it would be just one whack. Saves a lot of time when you are on the time clock.

You may have to lay off the squirrel thing as they are likely past prime now. And save a few breeders for next year.

So how many non target critters ( chihuahuas, toy terriers, kittens, pet rabbits
etc...... ) ???

OYE

What you need is a couple dogs like a lab who has grown up hunting and an aussie shepard who loves to tear anything up that isn't suppose to be around this house . They kept the coons at bay from a very large sweet corn patch every night and had fun doing it, im sure a few squirrels would be cake.

Although depending on where you live, its fun to have a few small game animals around for simply watching or for taking when they sound good for supper.

So how many non target critters ( chihuahuas, toy terriers, kittens, pet rabbits
None! Zero! Nada!
And there won't be any.

I know how to trap without trapping pets!!
The trap cubbies are pet-proof as well as I could make them.
And the peanuts / walnuts in shells are not something kittens & toy terriers typically chow down on unless starving.

Rope in my pocket would have been good, but I was in my Jammie's & bunny slippers when I got my thumb in the trap.

And rope didn't work when I tried it with these traps anyway.
The spring eyes are open and rough enough you can't set them with a sisal or nylon rope I had on hand.

Cut me a break will ya!!!!!
(Unless you want to pay the next $585 bill when they eat my truck wiring again?)

I ain't trapping anyone's pets!!

In order to trap ethically, you have to know how to exclude what you don't want to trap.
And I do.

What you need is a couple dogs
Been there, done that.
But here in town, pets off leash or outside the fence are against the law.

( besides getting run over in the street.)

LOL to me trapping is not real hunting no offense;)

You're right. Anyone can be a hunter, but it takes someone with real outdoorsmanship skills to be a trapper. That's why there are so many fewer trappers than hunters in the lower 48. In hunting, you only have to get within the distance your weapon will kill the animal. In trapping you need to attract that animal to a specific spot. Big difference.
