I have a question for anyone with a Texas CCW. I just got my confirmation letter in the mail letting me know that my application is being processed. How long does it take to get the actual license after you recieve the letter? I am counting down the days until I can be able to carry.

I've had mine for several years now, so it's not really fresh in my head. Best I can recall, it was about 8 weeks.

I'm sure it's totally a function of how busy the application office is.

The DPS website says 60 days, which is in line with the timing on mine. But is also says it may take up to 180 days if your background check is sketchy (I'm paraphrasing).

Here's the link:

I got mine in about 30 days from processing. However, I know people that have taken as much as 90 days.

It is as Imaginos said - it depends on how backed up they are.

I have had mine for a couple of months now. Took not quite two months to get mine in the mail.

My last renewal only took a couple of weeks. I am getting ready to send in my second renewal, we'll see how long this one takes.

Took about a month to get my new one, but that was almost 4 years ago. As you can see it varies from 2 weeks to 3 months. Be patient. Keep fondling your carry weapon while sitting in your recliner and tell it how much you want to take it every where you go. Soon, very soon. ;)

You can carry legally in your car TX without a license, you just have to keep it hidden, and leave it in there when you get to your destination.

I heard something like that, that you can carry it in your car without a license, but still kinda sketchy on actually taking it with me. Even if you do and you get pulled over will the police give you a hard time though?

The Texas penal code and code of criminal procedures makes it look like you can carry and a good lawyer will get charges thrown out. In the Leo academy they are telling me that all the large cities and a lot of the small cities will still arrest you for illegally carrying a firearm. It is then up to you to bond out, get a lawyer, and fight the court system. Get your CCL it is woth it.

60 days exactly for mine. The website never changed from "Processing" for me until 3 days before I got it. Then it said something that led me to believe it was done and in the mail. I tried to not think about it while waiting. I didn't help. :)

They are not supposed to, but there are some zealots around Houston that ignore the law and harass the citizens. In most places they won’t bother you. I have had a concealed carry for about three years. I believe it took between 5 and six weeks after the class before the license came.

Carry at home until you get your license. It's good practice. Carry in your car too. If you get pulled over don't tell the officer you have a gun in the car. Until you have a CHL you're not obligated to tell him anything. If your gun is in your glove compartment, make sure you get your insurance paperwork out of your glove compartment BEFORE the officer approaches your vehicle.

I mailed in my application January 14, got my confirmation letter January 22 and then finally got my CHL March 1. It took me about 6 weeks from submission to license or about 5 weeks after my confirmation letter. It was a looooooong 6 weeks with much anticipation...should have seen me when I finally got it...It felt like I was 8 years old and it was christmas morning :D

I'm planning on taking my first CHL course here in DFW next weekend....I know that I can either fill out the paperwork online before the class, or get the paperwork at the class...anyone have any recommendations as to which one is preferable?

I got mine in 2006 and it took only like a month..but a friend of mine got his like 2 months ago and it took him like 2 months. Like everybody have said, it depends on how bad is the backup at the processing center.

i prefer doing it online that way when you go to the class, you already have some paperwork done that they're going to be doing at the class. then is just finish and send it.. good luck

Just an FYI: if you've done anything incorrect on your application they'll return that section to you to fix...and the 60-day clock is reset to that date, not the original date of submission.

Had one friend get his fingerprint cards returned; these were originally done by an LEO.

Had another get his - get this - affidavits returned because the way he initialed each bullet-pointed statement. He called DPS, "We just want to be sure those were your initials...oh, and the 60-day clock resets to now."

These guys applied during December...and both just received their CHLs this month.

Hang in there, it'll get to you!

Take care,
