i live in austin and so i dropped off my application packet at the office personally. it only took 28 days:) you can actually call them with your app. # and ask them what the status is. i called 2 days before i got mine and they said its already in the mail.

Man this anticipation is killing me already. Everyday the first thing I do is go check the mailbox to see any new letter from the DPS.

Even though it says in the state of Texas that you can be carring a concealed weapon in car, I still think that I should just wait. I dont want to take the chance of being pulled over and going down to the city jail. Even though the case will not hold. So I guess I have to keep counting down the days until

How often do you get pulled over? You could always carry a copy of the DPS press release in your car while you're waiting for your CHL to arrive...

HB 1815 excludes from unlawful carrying of a weapon a person who is carrying a handgun, illegal knife, or club on the person’s own premises or premises under their control or inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or is under their control. The bill makes it an offense to carry a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person’s control if the handgun is in plain view or the person is engaged in certain criminal activity, is prohibited from possessing a firearm, or is a member of a criminal street gang.

I mailed my packet Feb 3rd
Austin received it Feb 5th
Seven weeks later my status on their website still says "Packet mailed to applicant". I called them a couple of weeks ago and they said that my application was still in prescreening.
Loooooooooong wait.

:banghead:

I like this one:

HB 1839 requires concealed handgun license (CHL) holders to take a continuing education course to renew their CHL every 10 years instead of every five years.

So, does this mean my CHL is good for 10 years, or only until the date written on it?

It took about 50 days for me. Not bad, really, considering the number of folks who are getting them for the first time (a very good thing!)

Only until the date written on it. You will need to renew your CHL every 5 years, but you will only have to take the course every other renewal.

I did my renewal on April 8th. still waiting. The last two times I applied it came by regular mail, how do they send them out now?

I think an average guess would be 45 days. If you mess something up and you get the letter in the mail (like I did), correct it IMMEDIATELY, call them back. For mine, I had a discrepancy with employment. I wasn't employed for a year when I was in school. I mean seriously, what business of it was theirs? Anyway, you'll be fine. The wait is long, but it is worth it.

Well I just checked the website to see the status of my renewal and I was happy to see it has been upgraded to "Issued", Yea!
I should have it with in the next day or two if it doesn't get lost in the email.
Last renewal took 2 weeks.
This time it looks like is going to end up being 7 weeks.

:( Sadly, I have not sent off my application yet. My wife and I have taken the class, we're just waiting for a little extra cash to send off to Uncle Sam; $290 bucks is a bit of a dent in the 'ol wallet. Hopefully our prints come out clear.

I don't remember how long it took for the original or the renewal, but I do remember that DPS was pretty helpful when I called, and they had no problem looking up the status for me. Everyone I talked to over there was very polite, and even offered to check before I could even ask.

You're supposed to get a letter saying that they a processing your application? I sent mine in over a month ago and haven't gotten one of those. Hmmm now I'm worried.

I know they received my packet 2 days later because I sent it certified mail.

I can't use the website to check my status because I got my packet at the range. I hope I don't get it kicked back for some stupid error.

check out the texaschlforum.com for more details but it's not unusual for it to take 120 days or longer. DPS reportedly hired some temp help to speed this up recently so maybe those times are going to improve. this has been a pretty big story in TX, surprising that so many people are not aware of it.
