This is something I've never even considered. Do you EDC flint and tinder or something? Waterproof matches?

I'm slow to respond, Bobson, but I generally carry a butane lighter. Just a Bic or Scripto disposable, two if one is getting low. Other things in the car (including flares). If I'm going into the hills, I'll go with multiple sources, add in waterproof matches, fuel tabs, etc.

Not long after I got my straight handled Busse Steelheart II (ordered in 1999, received in 2000), I had a custom sheath made, including a pocket. The pocket carries a firestarter I picked up at a gun show: Rectangle of oily reddish brown wood (I forget the type), a 3/8" rod of magnesium and 3/8" rod of "flint" glued on one side, a coin shaped striker that is a plastic disc holding what appears to be a piece of carbide (marked E-Z Way Sharpener, so I guess it has two functions) attached to the wood by a small thong. Shave the wood, shave the magnesium, then make a shower of sparks. I usually carry something like trioxane or similar fuel tabs, too.

Almost never use the blade of my 30 year old Bowen Survivor belt buckle (in its fourth or fifth belt, this time a custom Beltster), I use the cap lifter more often, but constantly use my Al Mar SERE2000 and my Ed Caffrey EDK-1 neck knife, and the blades on my Leatherman Wave fairly often. Just can't imagine not having a knife handy. Shortly after dropping a small pistol and tactical level flashlight into my bathrobe, I realized I needed at least a pocketknife in that. One uses a knife constantly around the house.

I have always been a huge fan of knives. I always have a large folder on me and recently have been thinking of buying or better yet making a fix blade to carry either on belt or IWB. So if I carry my pistol I still keep a knife on me, but the same is not true for a pistol as I am more likely to leave the pistol at home depending on where I am going.

Also agree that training is very important. Not just with firearms or knives but how about hand to hand combat as well. How fast can you get your attacker down? If you end up on the ground can you fight on the ground? Can you disarm an attacker? These are all very basic self defense that everyone should know. I have about 15 or more experience with self defense with just about every type of weapon that comes to mind. I don't suggest everyone put the time I have put into it but everyone needs the basics. I have taught everyone in my family how to take down an attacker quickly with little effort in order to get away.

I don't know ANY gun people who don't have and carry some sort of tactical knife, or at least a knife of some kind. I often ccw and carry both a small sheath knife AND a tactical folder of some sort. Today all I have is a 1911, extra mag, and a brand new Kershaw Leek in all black I bought last might for $40.00 at Walmart. I usually carry a newish SOG Trident folder. I also usually carry a small sheath knife as well in my boot, like a ESSE 3 or a Cold Steel Tokyo Spike or a Kershaw Black Dragon, which is my favorite sheath knife to carry.

Always. You are going to have to cut a lot more things in this life than you are going to have to shoot.

I carry on the weak side, in case I need to use it to help with gun retention, and my right arm is already busy.

In total agreement here. I also carry a folder strong side pocket also, but the primary knife is clipped to the weak side pocket.

I will always have at least one (well-sharpened) knife on my person unless I am; (1.) naked or (2.) in a location or circumstance proceeded by a prohibiting metal detector. I seldom think of it as a "weapon" but rather as a "tool". I'm an old country bumpkin & apples taste better if you carve 'em up a bit. ;)

I guess I was lucky to survive to my current age because although I've carried a knife just about every day of my life since age 10 or so it's always been a small Old Timer stockman. Not very big. Not much of a weapon. But indispensible for everyday living. I carry a firearm because I don't want to take a knife to a gunfight. I believe a handgun is a good deterrant and if it doesn't deter someone that needs deterred, it's a good weapon. It's getting serious out there too. Shrade Waldman quit the knife business and the only Old Timers out there now are made in China. Luckily for me I found four of the originals in good shape on eBay. That should last me as long as I'll need them.

I see no reason to carry a "combat, or tactical" knife. I do carry a pocket knife as I have since I was a kid. It is not a defensive weapon, it is a tool. I do also carry a firearm, another tool.

I always carry a Benchmade AFCK. This is my personal favorite , the AFCK has been discontinued but I found a second on Ebay .

If I have britches on I have a pocket knife of some sort along with a larger lock blade, lately thats a buck strider or sog and also a sog multitool or sometimes other multitools. The pocket knife is for everything, the multitool is for everything else and the large blade is for defense and larger jobs (which is rare). Sometimes I add a fixed bade and subtract the folder. If i'm add work i'm armed, if i'm in the truck i'm armed, sometimes i'm armed in public if I feel the need but not often, if i'm at home theres a gun close by.

But I always have a knife of some sort, I just use them so much thru out the day that I would be lost without a knife.

Interesting thread. I carry a knife, but a small one that I have no combat training with. Where would you guys suggest obtaining that type of training? I read the part about the next door marine, but that might not be appropriate in most cases. Is there any kind of certification offered by NRA or any group? Any basic combat class available? And if so, what do these type classes recommend that you carry? There doesn't seem to be a pattern here for what we do carry.

When I first started reading this thread, I was going to say "absolutely" now on page three, I realize that you guys are knife junkies too. The number of knives I carry depends on what I'm doing. If I'm at home, I might just have a CRKT rollock or a kershaw Needs work clipped to my pocket. Casually out and about, I might add a Ringer 2 neck knife. At work, where I can't carry a "weapon", I haveone of the folding knives in my pocket, neck knife, gerber multitool on my belt, and a kabar TDI weakside, as a "seatbelt cutter". The order varies, sometimes, but there's always at least one.

I also always carry a knife, regardless of whether or not I'm carrying anything else. Knives are just to handy on a day to day basis to be without one.

Just a thought. But if you carry a knife yet have no combat training with that weapon, might you be better off leaving it hidden? No sense in pulling it out if you have no idea what you're doing. The other guy just might.

I repeat. Where would you get serious training in combat knife fighting?

No sense in pulling it out if you have no idea what you're doing. The other guy just might.

What you mean to say is, "the other guy just might shoot you". Just about the only time to use a knife is if you've been surprised at close range, and "the other guy" shouldn't know you have a knife. Maybe ever, because you're going to use that knife to cut, and cut, and cut, until either the threat goes away, or the lights go out.

. <---------------------- (this is a period)

It's really amazing to have to say this, but if you're already in such a bad situation that you might very well DIE, what do you have to lose? Nothing. So you fight. At least, I will. Because, even if I don't make it out alive this time, maybe I can save someone else, some future victim, as I go. If you're stupid enough to produce a deadly weapon when you're not in serious peril, you're an idiot, and deserve whatever you get.

combat knife fighting?

What most people know about using a knife in Self Defense comes from the same source as what they know about using a firearm, TV/Movies/Games.

The requirements for SD are different enough from combat that the training is different. There numerous seminars and schools that teach SD with a knife. There are very very few that teach combat because it isn't realistic to think you'll see combat with a knife. Look for martial arts styles that incorporate blades as a primary weapon. Look for seminars and workshops by people such as South Narc and Michael Janich.

Remember that a knife is a last ditch defensive tool that requires you to be in contact with your attacker and that you don't want to be showing the knife to them before engaging. Surprise is your ally in such situations.

I realized that one little part of my last post might be confusing. Interviews conducted with police officers after stabbings indicate it's common to suffer a knife wound during a struggle, and only feel the impact, without understanding any cut or puncture has happened. This means it's entirely possible you can inflict serious injury on an opponent who is a deadly threat, and they may not realize they've been cut, which may give you as the defender the opportunity to keep cutting them until they let go or fall unconcious.
