Is this stupid on my part, stereotyping, or valid? Even at a gun range, I get uncomfortable around people who are sporting camo (and are not about to go hunting), combat boots, a Glock or some other gun shirt, weird hair etc. When I see these people at Wal Mart or a gas station I get a little wary. I just can't help but think they're about to pull something crazy.

I assume most of us on here are very unassuming. I wear jeans, a regular t-shirt or polo, k-swiss shoes, versace eyeglasses, longish hair.

I apologize in advance to anyone who feels I am stereotyping them. I realize there are valid situation in which one would look like a gun nut (hunting, in military).

If they are acting weird, then yes I will be uncomfortable, but if they are simply wearing boots, camo, and a Glock shirt then no. They are no different then someone wearing a sport jersey around in my opinion.

Yep, I'm a little uncomfortable around guys like this:

Motivators

I like the "quiet professional" type that the REAL pro's tend to be.

Well, I'll admit to having to wear camo periodically (and this confuses far too many). But, I also have to appear in CNT, too (which seems to be equally confusing).
I hardly ever wear polo shirts, and certainly not to the range (this is central Texas).
I wear ankle or more high shoes when I think my poorer ankle migh want the support (like making periodic 2-300yd walks).

Oh, and I've been The People Your Parents Warned You about, for much of my life, and for a number of reasons.

um, just because they are wearing something, no. If they are acting weird, then yes. I usually wear combat boots, they are comfortable and i like them. (My boss at works thinks im a miniature Ted Nugent)
If i notice anyone with a CW, i dont usually feel too weirded out, i actually feel a bit jealous (im just 20, so i still have 12mos to go. sad...)

Besides, what do you consider 'weird' hair?

Camo, boots, weird hair. Sounds like me in the Army!

Seriously, no, they don't make me feel uncomfortable at all. I might laugh at them for looking like dweebs but they don't make me feel uncomfortable.

I'll be in some old fatigues and combat boots on the lower half and just a regular shirt when going to the range or doing something that I know I will get dirty and that included making stops on the way there or on the way back, so I am sure that sometimes I look like a gun nut. I judge people for what they wear, but not usually to determine if they are dangerous not. Just to label them as jackases :D for example I like to hit the slopes a lot being here in Colorado. The new trend on the slopes for the younger crowd is guys wearing skin tight jeans....yup jackasses.

No offense, but I think it looks kidna cool all that military gear. Seeing the way thigns are going in our country, I think all of us law abiding citizens and gun owners should be ready for action, at any moment. Who knows, suddenly we may find that we need to camoflague ourselves from an attack, or perhaps they spend a lot of time in the forest. Where I use to live, it was very rural and many wore the gear, because they spend half their day in the forest, the other half in the town. WHy constantly have to change your clothing, just to make yourself look kind and gentle?

Oh yeah and for the record, I am a normal looking, low-key guy. Don't sport military gear, I just think it looks cool. When I am in the bush, I do like to dress up a bit on the rough side. Also helps makes the BG's more nervous, which is a good thing out there.

BTW.. Why are they considered gun nuts to you? Wouldn't you just want to call them military freaks. I thought everyone on the high road is a "gun nut". Pardone me, I am bad with terminology here.

I tend to laugh (discretely) at the Mall Ninja types more than feel nervous around them. I got rid of everything "camo" in the house the day I got my DD-214 and I generally wear loafers.

like the "quiet professional" type that the REAL pro's tend to be.

Other than tending to be fitter than the people around them most of the Special Forces types I associated W/ during my military career really wouldn't stand out in a crowd at Walmart.

Those that put on the "quiet professional" persona generally aren't.
They're the ones that make me nervous.

As a fellow gunny, no it doesn't weird me out. BUT, and I hope to not offend anyone, I think that look does perpetuate the "crazy" stereotype amongst people not as intimately involved in the cause as we.

If I were uncomfortable around people who dress, or are groomed, oddly I'd have to sell my Harley and buy a Honda. The next time you see someone with a shaven head, wearing black leather and novelty helmet riding a dirty Harley, it might be me :D

Do the 5 chainsaws and 30 razor sharp chisels in my pickup truck concern anyone?

I thought about ditching all of it, but I am a sucker for functionality. They are still pants and boots that work in my eyes. Hell I even use my old field jacket when it get cold out, plus when I show up to a bar wearing it I get a few free drinks! gotta love that built in benefit :D

I kept my intermediate cold weather boots to shovel snow in and my polypros. other that that I simply don't feel comfortable wearing my old uniforms I knew I was never going to wear them again so I got rid of them

I tend to be annoyed by any extreme in dress. At my ccw class I was surprised to see that most everyone there where well dressed and groomed and looked like the last person I would ever think was carrying. TO be honest most of them looked down right nerdy. On the other hand I go to my local gun shop and there are young guys there with baggy pants, a wife beater, mohawk and piercings. I think to my self, all have just as equal of a right to carry as I do, and I am probably as much as a threat as they are. However in my imagination I can see a really nerdy guy accidently shooting me, and an extremely "different" in aperiance looking guy flipping out and shooting me.

Spend a time at the gas station in my area. It's liable to collect some types out of the hills like deadwood washing up onto a beach in the morning after.

After they refill thier coffee, smokes and perhaps a bite to eat, thier mood improves and they become more normal as they return to thier vehicles. Add spirits and thier physical coordination actually improves each step. Good but not yet safe enough to shoot on.

LOL

I see a few guys like that in the gun shop. But one of the shops I frequent is in a "rednecky" area of York County. I don't wear the cammy pants, but I do have a couple surplus military blouses. Hell, maybe I fit in then.
I can't say they bother me but occasionally the "bubba" type guys try to play the role which is a bit irritating.
You just got to ignore them and go about your business.

My CCW class was in June. One guy actually showed up in a Pea Coat W/ his wife (she was taking the class) carrying a.357. He was so proud when the instructor "made" him I thought he was going to burst. I thought he was an absolute idiot.

I have a "professional" job I'm required to at least dress business casual at work and I tend to carry that out of the office. Loafers, Dockers, Polo shirt, full size 1911 and most people don't look twice.

I don't concern myself with someone look or style, it's someone that is displaying strange behavior is what you need to be worried about.

The smell some of them put off is what usually gets me.... I think we all know the type. About 100 lbs overweight and outfitted in camo at the gun show and seems to have missed last months shower.

I wear camo pants and springfield armory t-shirt's quite often, but I'm a clean cut, nice guy.:p It has garnered me a few looks from some folks, but I don't care.

I have found that most of the guys that dress out in fatigues and combat boots are wanna be's and have never been in combat or in the military. The ones that bother me are the mall Ninjas with black fatigues and combat boots and the stupid looking sunglasses. They have a saying--If you look the part, you must talk the talk and walk the walk. I like for those types to get in my face only to be embarrassed when they are taken down by a little 165 lb senior citizen with bi focals and a bad attitude.
