These seem really cool.

I wish they made one in .300 Blackout.

Anyone have a review on these?

There was a long thread on these a month or so ago. I like the concept and the rifles and wish for an ultralight version. Savage is not known for dumping half baked products on the market to test.

Is there any word on an ultralight model or model in .300BO?

Lever action rifles are not generally found in popular cartridges for bolt guns. Like 30-06, .308, 6.5CM, 7MM RM and on and on. Not everyone is in the market for this type of rifle. But I am.

I shot a SP (probably) 50 years ago; if I remember correctly, it was in a 6mm caliber and from Norway, Sweden, ???. Anyway, they are “slick” in their own right - yet another rifle mechanism concept. I am a traditional bolt action guy, I don’t own a SP rifle nor probably will I ever. Nothing wrong with SP rifles mind you, I just don’t have the interest. Presenting bolt-working speed and the likes is academic to me as I will never need those milliseconds from a bolt gun (that is what semi’s are for). So again and as usual, you own, buy, like what you wish in a hobby. But, they are slick for sure.

I have straight pull; Ross 1910, Swiss K31, Steyr M95 Stuzen, and my Mauser M96. The old ones have their charm but the M96 is high tech, compact light short (as is the Steyr M95) but has an M16 type rotating bolt with a intial camming leverage that leaves the othes in ancient dust. I shot a Blaser too and those are kewl and slick.
The rifle Steve S. is referring to is the 1895 Lee 6mm Straight pull produced by Winchester, I believe.

So how come I have a 99 Savage in .308? And I can get Browning lever actions in Magnum calibers.

All of my AR’s are straight pull and faster than turn bolts. :)

Years ago I played with a Sig rifle that used the Blazer collet style straight pull action. I liked the caliber swap capability. Not enough to buy one myself though.

I would much prefer the collet over the ball bearings the Savage impulse uses.

Why is it that anything new to the firearms market is met with, “but the thing I’m used to is better?” I don’t understand how savage (or the others) bringing a different variation to bolt actions has anything to do whatsoever with levers or semi autos. I was under the misconception that marketing anything had more to do with analyzing varying tastes of potential customers, and less with looking for what already exists which is close enough to what you had in mind that you just stop having ideas or developing them into products. Now that I’ve read this I realize I was wrong. Apparently innovation is unnecessary. I’ll put this iPhone down and go grab my cups and string to make my next post.

I hadn’t heard of them until now, glad you asked about it OP.

I just looked at them on Savage’s website. It’s definitely a departure from the normal bolt gun. Not only is it a straight pull but ambidextrous via a bolt handle that can be removed and change sides and angle if you want. Also appears that the barrel is designed to be easily removed and replaced. May not be a quick change barrel but doable by the average shooter with hand tools. Also see a model that has a fairly large detachable box mag.

Kind of cool, wonder what the price will be like?

I think or thought we were talking about current production guns? Where can you order or purchase a new Model 99? The Savage 99 is certainly a different sort of lever and is the Browning lever guns and the Henry Long Ranger. At least the Henry can be bought new today (well, I suppose one could). And the Savage Impulse can be bought new today (maybe).

Nobody is forcing you to buy an Impulse, but straight pull rifles are not new though the Savage take on it is very interesting to many people, yourself not included because you have a Savage 99. Not sure how I understand that negates a straight pull bolt gun.

I saw some on Gunbroker for about $1,200.

What other gun has used this type of ball bearing locking?

I thought is was a Colt-Sauer, but that doesn't seem correct.

I know I have seen this concept before...

I enjoy seeing market innovation. It's not for me, but I know a bunch of folks who find themselves needing follow up shots frequently. More power to them.
