I just want to know if there are any problems with feeding or accuracy,I'm thinking of having a custom bolt action built and would like the option of using stripper clips (As stated before in a different thread about doing the same to a CZ-527) to load.

Any ideas as far as iron sight options will be helpful,as stated in the other thread I'm leaning toward a ghost ring rear sight set up with protected front post.

I'm thinking that it wouldn't hurt to shorten the barrel down to carbine length (16 -17 inches) the stock would need to be tough enough to use in close quarters if needed with a 13-inch length of pull.

no problems w/ feeding or accuracy...

not sure this is the best choice for a home defense weapon though, assuming that is what a ghost ring and 'close quarters' alludes to.

at any rate, the rifle is capable of what you are asking, here.

It would be used more for a brush/Field carbine, not meant for home defense more of an out and about carbine, that could be used for HD in a pinch.

I have a Rem 700 sps Varmint .223 and I love it. I cant give you any advice on iron sights, I went straight to optics with mine. Ive never had any problems feeding and it out shoots my AR 24" Bull barrel at 100 yards.
so you want a Rem 700 for a field carbine? If you have the barrel cut down to 16" youll have to have it recrowned. Im sure you knew that, and the sps varmint comes with a nice carbon vented stock.

here is a thread of mine and some groups it made.

Why not get an LTR with a 20 inch barrel? I've got one, very accurate, no issues.

Nice groups

I know the barrel will need re-crowning.

I was thinking about getting the chamber and barrel chrome lined to cut down on fouling a bit.

Sounds like you need a Mini-14 or a low end AR15. Autos are much handier for close in work and home defense. The AR comes with a chrome lined barrel too.

If you will get a CZ 527 carbine you wont have to shorten the barrel. Its already done.

Plus you can reload with a box magazine. No stripper clips needed.

It has open sights with a really nice sight picture.

If you want to cut down on fouling load your ammo with Ramshot Tac powder. John Barness wrote that he shot hundreds of rounds without cleaning and his rifle still shot less than 1" groups. No chrome needed unless you shoot corosive ammo.

And yes look at a Mini-14. The new 580 series are surprisingly accurate. I have two because they shoot so well.

I thinking more along the lines of a shrunken down traditional Bolt action battle rifle as far as loading mechanics and function, plus detachable mags take a bit away from the lines of the weapon.

The chrome lining was an after thought.

The list shrinks a bit, just need to find someone that can do the stripper clip feed mod (Anyone know a smith that could do this?)

I might keep the barrel at 20 inches (still thinking that over)

My next question is about Mil Spec stripper clips for the 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.

Will .223 work in them just the same or will it be a bit of a loose fit?

Get a Remington Mod-7

Mine already has an 18.5"bbl. It dosen't loose as much velocity as you might think. My preferred load is 26.5gr of RL15 under a 60gr Hornady softpoint. It gets 3,000fps. I get 3,150fps with 27.5gr of BLC2 under a 55gr bullet.

I've taken more deer with it than anything else. With low power scope (mine wears a Tasco 2x-8x compact) it is a favorite "walkabout" gun. Does anything I "need" a rifle to do in this part of the woods. My bigger guns are for "somewhere else"............

Mine has the factory Iron sights on it too. The current production I don't believe have the sights and have 20" bbls.

I don't know why you would want or need to use stripper clips. It dosen't take but a few seconds to pop a few rounds into the magazine......Single load it from the box if working on a parariedog town.....keeps from overheating the barrel.....
