Ar-15 flip up irons vs open style red dot

There's nothing wrong with the YHM flip ups. Good deal. Now you can start socking your money away for a good red dot, or maybe even a 1.5X ACOG.

I like the open style holographic sights, I don't want to say the word cheap, but whats a good entry level open style red dot

Personally I'd just buy some inexpensive but serviceable iron sites and save up to buy a higher quality rifle in the future. I'm sorry, but I don't understand when somebody says they don't want to cheap out and buy a piece of junk, but the gun in question is a DPMS

Brady, first let me say that I really don't like the Eotechs. I've killed six of them, at least. In fact, I GAVE my last one away to someone, either here or on Sniper's Hide.

In any case, holographic sight are really not one of those products that you're going to want to cheap out on. There's a lot of tech under the hood of those sights and I really doubt that it can be done anywhere close to right on the cheap. My advise would be to save your money and get a lower line Eotech. At least you'll have the warranty and customer support.

All of the Eotech knockoffs that I've seen have been complete trash.

Man, there's no reason to directly attack the guys equipment like that. If it runs, it runs. If he maintains it and replaces what breaks with quality parts, the rifle will get to be better than it is now, at least on paper.

Honestly, the rifle sounds pretty cool to me. I'm no DPMS fan, but it sounds like it should be a pretty handy rifle. If it runs like it should great, if it doesn't the beauty of the AR platform is that it can likely be easily fixed.

It sounds like it hasn't even been shot yet, which is as good a time as you'll get to realize it's time to bail and take a step up.

Trust your Iron Sights

From a former Marine, learn to trust your iron sights. Shoot straight, shoot true. Then when you consider yourself accomplished, add a red dot.

Vortex is best bet! IMO

It hasn't been shot alot since it doesn't have sights on it. I ran 50 through it the day I got it. Cheap winchester white box ammo, no failures of any kind so far. I did do alot of research before buying the cheaper dpms upper, the large majority of owners seem to love them. The people who complain the most about them in alot of cases say they never owned one. Go figure.

I have one direct experience with DPMS (and the research I did prior to buying made sure I would never buy one). The guy next to me on the line last week had one. It jammed so bad on a round of Remington brass case .223 that neither of us could get the action to open. I probably could have if I really started to beat on the rifle, but since it wasn't mine I did not. A member of the range staff was summoned and through judicious use of buttstock-to-table-pounding, the gun was cleared.

Not for me.

If it treats you well, it treats you well. My recommendation, RE: flip up sites vs RDS stands. I think Aimpoint is where it's at for a RDS. For a flip up style site I think the Magpul MBUS is a quality but not too expensive option.

well we'll see how long mine goes until something like that happens. I think I'll keep tabs of how many rounds go down range before I have any failures.
