AR-15 pistol anyone have one? How do you like it? 5.56mm (223) any good for home defense? Do you have a picture of yours that you can post here?

They're LOUD. Really, really loud. With plugs in properly, my eardrums still met somewhere in the middle of my head each time I fired. The concussion from the blast was worse than the report, and recoil was less than 38spl out of a snub revolver.

In short - not for home defense, but for fun.

I've got the Bushmaster.

Home defense?
Depends on your home. It's great for me, out of town. A BG would not want to be facing this pistol. The firepower it can put out is impressive.

They are loud, impressive and accurate. Very light weight, very little kick.

I think they would benefit from a good reloaded round, instead of shooting a round loaded with powder for a long barrel. The BM pistol has a 7 inch barrel.

The bullet velocity is in the plus 2200fps range,
Win White box= 2296fps
Wolf= 2188fps

I leave the laser on the gun when I'm not using the Red Dot.

This is a "capture" from some viedo I took, that's why the picture is so small.
I have a new still camera ordered. :)

Did I mention the gun is a lot of fun. :D

Well, the AK pistol is a lot heavier making shooting it one handed pretty hard.
The AR can be shot like a pistol.
The AK costs $$ hundreds less.
I guess they both cost close to the same to shoot.
The AK scope mount back cover costs $20, the AR scope mount cost $40.
The AK is more powerful. It will blow through 1/4 inch steel plate. The AR just craters the steel.

The AK looks mean. The AR looks like a paint ball gun.

A friend gave me a ChiCom 75 round drum mag that I tried out today. After about 50 rounds rapid fire I couldn't touch anything in front of the magazine without the danger of severe burns.

Believe me I could have. Even the handguard couldn't be touched. I fired the last 4 or 5 rounds holding the drum mag.

The ultimate night stand gun. :D

"The ultimate HD gun..." Sounds like instructions for washing a cat, it's just going to be messy with blood flying everywhere. Then again, I can't stand a stinky cat...

Most any shotgun or a handgun would be far better for home defense, IMHO.

Mine is a 7.5" barrel. The bullets never reach the velocity needed to fragment in the target. That's the .223/5.56s primary wounding mechanism--fragmentation. AR pistols just make .22 caliber holes. I would imagine they are rather effective at psychological stops (noise! flash! concussion!) but not too good at physical stops (not much tissue damage unless you dump a mag).

They are great for making 30 .22cal holes in a few seconds (mine bumps like a dream--super fast cyclic rate).

Aside from that, if you fired it in a house (or even in the wide open) without substantial hearing protection, say goodbye to your hearing (and hello to permanent hearing loss). The sound and concussion are impressive.

An AR pistol might be a practical weapon for a very limited range of specific applications, but mostly they're best left as range toys. As a range toy, they are TOPS! Seriously fun and a real attention getter.

Welcome to THR. I saw your posts on AR15.COM when you built your pistol. Looks like you did a great job. I bet it is a lot of fun.

I got one with a 10 1/2" bbl and carbine buffer tube with a ACE pad on it. I shaved the buffer down to be round and it looks good.

I would not use it as home defense unless I had no other option. It would make you deaf and blind if fired indoors at night. My Beretta 92fs with 20rd factory mag works great as a HD gun for me. The AR pistol would be a great gun if you were not worried about neighbors or the flash. 30rds of .223 should take care of whatever is bothering you. :D

Rosey

who did you get all the parts from? I'm looking into building one and yours looks exactly like what i'd like to build.

I'm particularly interested in the recoil tube, is that padding around it?

The buffer tube is from ACE Ltd.. It comes as a kit that includes the neoprene sleave. The upper is from CMMG.

I'm looking into getting a 9mm buffer or some other super heavy buffer to delay the bolt unlocking as long as possible. Prior to some tweaking, it would begin to rip off case heads once it got dirty. Doesn't do that anymore but the cases still show some signs of premature bolt unlock.

An AR pistol with a .40 cal upper would make an awesome home defense gun,IMHO...

.40 cal hollow points out of a 7" or 10" barrel should be a good man stopper out past normal pistol range. Make or buy a 7.62X39, upper if you want an AK pistol.... :p (I still want a real one too)

I will call my pistol the MP-AR_.40, MP-AR15, and the MP-AR_Krink depending on the caliber it is in at the time :neener: :)!

To bring this thread into over time, who knows how hard(costly) it would be to cut an Olympic .40 cal upper down to 7.5" or 10.5" be?What else would be needed to make an AR pistol in .40 besides the bolt, carrier, and hammer?

Nice don... I like the maxfire mount, did you fabricate that yourself or buy it?? great light.. carry one in my pocket everyday.
