Dont some AR pistols use a smaller bolt, carrier, spring. So why dont more people use it in rifles instead of the regular bolt and carrier with the protuding reciever extention? Is there a relyablity issue? Is it that i can only be used in pistols because of the shorted barrel and gas system? If you did, you could put things like a side folding stock that would REALLY make the rifle more compact. hell you could put a telescopic stock that also folds to the side. Imagine that!!! look ma my AR learned new tricks

You're thinking of the Olympic OA-93. It takes more than a smaller bolt carrier to allow you to dispense with the receiver extension tube. The extension tube contains the bolt buffer and spring, which are what return the bolt carrier to the forward position. The OA-93 accomplishes this with a return spring mounted above the barrel. I believe Olympic makes an AR rifle using this system.
