AR magazine strategy

brighamr, all of my ARs are noticeably more difficult to seat full mags than downloaded 1 or 2, and that includes new pmags. brands include RRA, colt, bushamster, essential, old and new (although I haven't tried the pmag on the colt or one of the RRAs)

What determines how hard it is to insert a loaded magazine? Don't have my rifle in front of me, but I'm thinking the bottom of the bolt carrier pushing on the top round eh?

From what I understand the reason to rotate rounds from the top of the mag is that if you are carrying that mag with you and it is bumping around and such the rounds will spin in circles very slowly and eventually the mag lips may etch a little groove in the first round which could cause failure to feed. I looked at the spare mag I carry with my pistol and after so long it started to do that, I'm not sure if an AR mag is more or less prone to that though.

Pelican Case

Organ, what kind of case is that? Looks like a tidy way to store mags ready-to-carry.

If I recall correctly it's a Pelican model 1200. It was about $30 or so, and all you have to do is pull out the foam from the bottom half. No cutting foam or anthing like that, 10 thirty round mags fit in it PERFECTLY.

Indeed they do - I asked because they look to fit so well that I was curious as to whether it was a purpose-made case. Looks like the perfect solution for grab-and-go magazine storage. Definitely looking into those.

I download my metal mags by 2 rounds... 28 or 18. I was getting problems seating mags on a closed bolt and occasional failures to feed when loaded to max. I do not have those problems with PMAGs and load those to normal capacity.

Hey Organ Donor,

What the heck is up with all the Wolf ammo? Haven't you heard that it absolutely will not work in an AR? :D

It seemed that by continuously chambering and re-chambering the same round when clearing a weapon, it increased the possibility of having the round fire due to repeated taps by the firing pin on the same primer.
Haven't heard that, interesting. Repeated chambering in an AR (or other semiautos) can also cause bullet setback, which causes increased pressure, which can cause kaboom.

Curious. Springs do not just randomly "Take a set". Frankly it really isn't possible under any normal circumstances I can think of. So unless you were storing the mags in an enviroment hot enought to re-temper the steel, I think there is something else to it.

I have never once had an issue with using 30 rounds in both pmags, and regular GI style mags. Leaving 30 rounds in a magazine has no effect on the springs tension or durability, only loading and unloading the mags wears out the spring.
