AR Purchase Advice

If I were buying another ranch gun I would try to buy one right from the factory. Colt 6920's are going for around 12-1300 on GB right now-I'd start there. Then you can add whatever bells and whistles you like, and you'll still have a gun with a factory warranty.
 
look at a del-ton m-4 i bought one awhile back for $700 out the door so far i've put around 600rds through it with no issues at all very accurate little carbine
also look at DPMS,rock river,stag.....now if you have allott of money to spend on this AR look at NOVESKE top of the line AR nobody makes one better than them a noveske WILL BE THE NEXT AR I BUY
 
I've mentioned this deal around THR a couple of times lately, and I think it's a steal. S&W M&P15's are on sale right now.

CDNN has the basic flat top for $799 w/5 free Pmags. So if you just want a run of the mill flattop that's a good way to go.

Code 4 has the M&P15X's (quad rail and flip up rear sights) for $899 w/5 free Pmags. I just bought one of these as my first AR and I'm very pleased. Here's a link if you want to see mine.

With these prices, you can get an awesome AR and still have some $$$ to spend on customizing it to your needs. For the money you'd spend on that Gunbroker sale, you could get the S&W and then put some pretty nice ranch gun related accessories on it.

GB would be my last choice now, 6920's were going ~$1000 at gun shows around here earlier this month. Seems Colt is re-entering the civilian market. I suspect the dealers that stocked up on the LEO models think people would rather have ones without the markings when available so they want to move them out.

I personally don't see why these are considered so good as everyone I've looked at had hand guards that rocked side to side 5-10 degrees. Doesn't scream top quality to me since none of the competition do this.

If you want it, I wouldn't bid more than $700 on it. That's pretty much what it is- a slapped together $700 frankengun AR built from parts of unknown quality, with a couple hundred $$$ worth of airsoft quality crap tacked onto it. Ask him to give you a detailed parts list outlining the manufacturer of each part, I bet you won't get a response.

Sorry, but I won't let a fellow Calvinist buy a crappy rifle ;-)
 
Oh wow, I just realized the opening bid is $1,399.95. Don't walk, run away from this one. There are too many good AR's available at good prices:

Noveske
Colt
BCM
LMT
Daniel Defense

Stick to this list and you'll do fine.
 
Texpatriate...I'm merely a "modified/somewhat" Calvinist.

I'm going to the local toy store today to see what they have in stock and check on prices. Somewhere around $1,400 is what I'll spend between the rifle and optics. Might just stick with a flat top and good old iron sights for a while.

So far...the Stag 2T seems to be sticking in my craw so to speak. Any words of wisdom on that unit?
 
Stag is not bad, but you can do better. I have gotten out of the habit of buying off-the-rack AR's from gun stores. You can save money and get better quality (in most cases) buying off the internet from places like www.grtactical.com, www.bravocompanyusa.com, and a handful of other sites that sell top quality stuff at lower prices than what you'll find in most gun shops. You can get a top quality BCM mid-length upper, lower, and bolt carrier group from G&R Tactical for $905 + shipping and FFL transfer fee. Add a Daniel Defense Omega 9.0 rail or a Larue Tactical 9.0 rail for another $275, and they'll probably even install it for you for free.

Throw on a quality sling, a vertical fore grip (tango down, Larue), and some rail covers (I like the magpul XTM ones), and you're still under your budget and can upgrade your stock and pistol grip if you want to.

High quality AR with high quality upgrades. You will not find a deal like that in a gun store most of the time. If you want a 16" rifle, go for an upper with a mid-length length gas system. Colt, Daniel Defense, and LMT are great guns as well, but only BCM and (I think) noveske make a mid-length. I'm not sure if Stag makes a middie or not, but BCM and Noveske are better quality.
 
I should add, if you can actually find a gun shop in your area that has a Daniel Defense, LMT, or Colt 6920 on their rack, go for it. In my experience though, you'll have a hard time finding a shop like that (except for the Colt). You'll find lots of shops with Rock Rivers, Stags, Busmasters, DPMS's, etc. for the same money that you could get a better rifle for. The Daniel Defense XV and DDM4 are probably two of the best deals in the AR market right now for an "off-the-rack" rifle.

I couldn't pass on it either :D. They also have Eotechs at good prices if you want one.

BTW, Mike Thompson @ Code 4 is great to deal with. He ships very fast and is very helpful.
 
Lotta guys on here w/more experience with AR's.

For an "all around ranch gun", I'd probably buy a doublestar or a S&W. Gosh, I didn't know S&W's were selling for that, I've seen pics of them and they certainly look nice.

I understand that the Colt, LMT, or other AR's are very well built and retain value well. But for just a ranch gun, I'd save some money to spend on optics, instead. Which appears to be what you're planning to do.

I'd probably avoid the Frankenguns.
 
The gun linked looks to have a bunch of overpriced useless junk on it to me. The setup makes no sense, you have a big honking scope, a forward pistol grip, a laser, and a flashlight. It has no irons and a bunch of overpriced unneeded accessories that arranged in their current configuration makes no sense.
 
Sounds like you are already leaning away, but I'll 3rd/4th the idea to run away from that rifle on Gunbroker; the only part on there that is not a complete POS is possibly the lower. It is worth half what they are asking, tops.

A S&W and 5 pmags for $899 is not bad, and the upper is much higher quality than the Model 1/Airsoft crap in the GB add.

If you want to use your full budget of $1400, you can probably get a 16" flattop LMT/BCM/Colt and a used Aimpoint for about that range. Those are true milspec minus the happy switch; definitely the best you can get regardless of price, and they are in your range. That is what I would do.
 
A Smith or a Stag are the best bang for the buck guns out there IMO. They will do everything you want one to do. There is nothing but a name making a Colt of the same configuration worth more money. My Stag trigger is the best out of the box "milspec" trigger I have shot, your mileage may vary.

Sounds nice...but it's missing something wiseguy. What would you suggest instead of the AR?
