I have considered a new upper or just selling it , but was wondering about a scope on the carry handle, opinion of folks that may have that set up or seen them? if the scope would be way to high?

What is often referred to dangerous game scope is equally at home on assault style rifle. It kind of makes sense. One of the most versatile scopes I own is Nikon 1-4x African with #4 reticle. I would avoid no magnification dot sights as much past 100m they are basically worthless.

The hole in the carry handle for mounting optics was an afterthought. Back when the M16 was adopted up until the last 20 years ago (ish), no one used scopes in the military except snipers and special ops units. "Back in the day" (pre- M4) our carbines (Mark 727) had the A2 upper, and yes we mounted aimpoints and similar optics on them. It was and is a pain in the butt. We were so happy when the M4 type flat-top carbines came into standard issue. I recommend spending $70-$80n and getting a flat top upper.

Oops, I forgot to mention when it comes to civilians no magnification illuminated dot sights are wonderful choice for turkey hunters.

I have one like this one I used fine without a riser. Not as good as a flat top receiver though. That particular rifle now just has better irons on it now.

The Deltas had the riser shown below on them.

I had a scope on my A2 with a handle. The cool thing about a scope mounted that high above the barrel is your point blank range opens up a bit.

I had a picatinny rail adapter that screwed to the handle by one large knob type screw. I had to crank it on there with pliers and some blue locktite or it would work loose. But once I had it cinched it worked great.

I ran a red dot on it too.

The advice on the cheek riser is good because you will be stretching to get your eye down the scope. With a riser its easy.

Handle mounted scopes work just fine on a 20 inch rifle.

Also you should be able to spank plates at 200 yards or so with a handle mounted 2-3 MOA red dot.

With a flattop carbine/middie you have to fight that that front sight in the FOV with a low mounted, low powered scope. Always a trade-off it seems.
