I'd like to purchase an AR15 stripped lower receiver. Any suggestions as to which one has proved to be the most reliable and kit friendly would be appreciated. Are there any other attributes besides "forged" and "anodized" I should be looking for? How can you determine that it is within mil-spec and will provide the proper fit when everything goes together?

Also, any suggestions for good/high quality kits would be welcome also.

Thank you.....

I have a RRA & a Superior Arms lower receiver & both were easy to use & build on. I've also shot a couple Stags, Ameetec & Bushmaster that also worked well & ended up fine rifles! ;)

So far I've built 3 stag lowers. No problems at all. RRA and Stag uppers have all worked fine with the lower. And Stag lowers are pretty cheap.

Why would you buy a stripped lower instead of a complete AR?

1) 200-300 cheaper for a rifle if you pay attention to the details and shop around
2) You are your own armorer from that moment on

3) Because you can

I have 2 waiting for a build as soon as I get around to it.

The lower receivers are all the same. Buy whatever logo you like the best or which one you get the best deal on. Stag, Lauer, Fulton, Rock River, Colt, Bushmaster, are all pretty much the same.

Even if you buy a COMPLETE lower rather than a stripped lower, you save the 11% Federal excise tax by just mating the upper and lower and pushing in two pins! Pretty good wages if you ask me.

Because you can build it the way you want it not the way some bean counter in [insert your favorite brand here]'s marketing or accounting department thinks is best. Of course buying a stripped lower and then a packaged 'kit' sort of defeats that purpose.

I've used Eagle Arms and DPMS lowers. Both are very nice and go together well.

Years ago, DPMS sold cast receivers, but they haven't done that in a very long time.

Rifle kits can typically be customized quite a bit.

Placed an order earlier this A.M. for a Stag complete lower to match up with a Colt upper.

Is there a cost advantage to buying a stripped lower as opposed to a complete lower, or is it more so you can install whatever trigger, etc. you want?
I'd like to get a few lowers and Stag sounds like a popular choice.

I built my AR using a Mega Gator lower. Excellent part. The pin holes for the trigger parts were a bit tight, but a quick twist by hand with a drill bit fixed that.

.50 Beowulf lower for the cool logo:

Thanks for all of the replies and insight. I've kind of taken a shine to the Rock River products but there seems to be a 90-120 day waiting period. Is this typical? Also, what is a reasonable fee for an FFL dealer to handle the transaction?
