Are all pistols calibers derived from the 9mm deficiancy?

I then started thinking that maybe that is the line of thought that decides the purchase of "other" calibers.

"Well I would get it in 9mm but I will get it in .40 instead because 9mm may not be enough, so I will deal with higher cost and lesser capacity."

Because other than increased stopping power the other rounds dont offer anything.... new.

Anyone that will debate 9mm vs 40,45, etc, is wasting time. The reason that I, and many others purchase different calibers is simple, we want variety. If I dont have it yet, I want it. Kinda like the farmer in the old joke that says "I dont want all the land, just whats next to mine." I dont want every gun, just the ones I dont have.

Yeah I agree, and I can see the correlation, but the 6 8 10 and 12 cylender engines, actually work better. I mean they are measurable faster, better, etc in every way.

People are still arguing wether there is any improvement, and the improvement is slight at best between the calibers as far as effectiveness.

I guess I am saying, there is no debate a 500 HP engine is more powerfull than a 140 hp one. There just.. isnt.

And yet we debate calibers, and there is so little data available there actually IS a debate.

Not including revolver calibers of course, some of which really are leaps and bounds ahead of auto-loaders.
there is no debating a 10mm is more powerful than a 9mm

Every way?
How about fuel economy?
I drive an hour each way to school every day. The 8, 10, and 12 cylinder engines certaily would not be better for me.
It's all about what you're looking for.
Personally, I still say it's about money.

re: engine power comparison. It is a perfectly valid analogy, however keep in mind:

While it is undisputed that a 500hp V10 is more powerful than a 140hp I4, it is also generally accepted that it will consume more fuel, weigh more, and require more expensive maintenance than the I4. These are its drawbacks.

Similarly, when you compare 9mm Parabellum to, say, .44 Magnum, nobody will dispute that .44 Mag is more powerful than 9mm. However, guns chambered in .44 Magnum are larger and heavier, .44 Magnum recoils far more than 9mm, and you won't get the same cartridge capacity in a .44 mag firearm as you will in most 9mm firearms.

There is always a trade off for more power.
