Are Sadlak and SEI Mounts Too Short?

I'm looking to get a Sadlak or an SEI scope mount for my Springfield M1A, but I am concerned that they are too short (at least the standard sizes). I plan to get a scope with a variable magnification of up to 20x or 24x. All the photos I see of these mounts show the scopes placed as far forward as they will go -- not giving a huge amount of eye relief and the scopes themselves don't look particularly big.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Thanks

If you mean do the "standard" type military m14 mounts mount scopes too far forward the answer is yes that can be an issue and is a problem I notice with a lot of people's setup not just the M14. Here is a picture of mine as far back as I could get it with "low" rings:

I could have got it father back about a half inch or so but would require higher rings.

You can put large objective scopes on but it depends how high you want your scope. There is also the problem of clearing the back sight that you have to contend with. Most M14 owners will agree that the standard scoping system on an M14 is not ideal. That being said my setup above works well. The scope is low and far back enough and that is with a Bushnell Elite 4200 that is not known for generous eye relief. You would be fine mounting a Leupold mk4 or VX-3 on an M14.

Note the SEI makes other extended mounts that are for scopes with larger objectives or for scopes like the ACOGs that need to be mounted farther back because of their poor eye relief. Look at the following page at items 2005, 2007, 2008:

Thanks for the photo

That helps. I can see that you have your scope about as far back as it will go, but it looks like the gentleman in the photo here: http://www.smithenterprise.com/misc/2006testimonial.html
has his scope as far forward as it will go.

Part of the problem is that without having the mount before I buy it, it's tough to approximate which setup is best for me.

Most people want their scopes as low and as far back as reasonably possible. You want yours as far forward as possible, why?
