I am considering a Sig Sour 229 9mm what make it worth the extra 400.00 over a S&W M&P or a RugarSR9

Well it use to be because they were made in the Motherland but since they make them in good old NH i wouldn't waste my time. I got a M&P 9c and you wont be disappointed i can promise you that also, Randy lee at apex tactical has every goodie you could think of for the m&p line. Also with the M&P you have your pick of magazine safety, thumb safety, no safety etc. You don't have that choice with Sig or Ruger. I do plan on getting the sig p290 when it comes out because it just looks up my alley but if the price tag is over 500-600 which it will. I'm just going to get my 637 j-frame :D

It all comes down to your personal preference and what your tastes are. Bad part is people these days are tasteless.

This is my compact rocking a full size 17 round magazine, with a +5 base pad and a x grip full size to compact adapter. I pretty much turned my compact into a full size range, home defense gun like that. I want to see Sig do that! Also i will be getting a storm lake ported barrel extended! 22+1 keeps me nice and cozy at night

In my experiance my answer would be yes. Then again CZ and Beretta make good autoloaders for $500 - $600 which are all metal.

I thought for a minute that this was gonna be a counter thread to the "Are HKs woth the money" thread. :D

I don't think it is a better gun than the S&W M&P, and I don't believe the SIG is worth $400 more than either (and with some hunting you should be able to find a P229 priced closer to that of the M&P).

SIG used to make better guns than they do now ... they're still good guns but unless you're stuck on the idea of a steel framed pistol over a polymer one I think you'll find you're better served by the S&W.

But keep in mind its what feels best in your hand and how it shoots for you ... if you get a chance to shoot all three, go with the one YOU shoot best, not the one that some anonymous person on the internet says.

On a side note you'll probably find the resale value of the SIG to be higher and the depreciation lower than either of the others.

I just love how the M&P line allows you to pick what you want such as safety options. Also they were the first to have the interchangeable palmswells which really gives you that nice custom fit! Also you can't turn a compact sig into a full size sig..... Sig fell off when they changed there name to Sig Arms. First gun i grew to love and wanted was the p228 then a sig pro then a glock now i'm rocking the m&p and its the only gun i own now!

Never owned a SIG, know a few that do and they swear by them, but all of those models are a little older and made in Germany. It does seem that the models made in N.H. have been getting some internet reviews that are not in the best light....YMMV.

The only people who should be talking should be the ones who owned the following....... I stated why Sig isn't all cracked up and how the M&P line is better, no one even gave me a rebuttal? For the money no sir its not worth it unless your buying the p210 or the x5 lol how about this you go buy a p250 and let me know how you feel! Why are you bound towards the 229 anyways its not really a carry gun.........

If i was forced to buy a Sig and it had to be a 229 it would be this

Limited edition Homeland Security package only 1,000! They made them when Sig was awarded a contract to supply homeland with around 5,000+ pistols. Same gun that protects you know who!

On sale 2005-09-11, SIG Sauer Homeland Security Pistols (HSP) are the same models SIG builds for the United States Department of Homeland Security. This is a limited production run of 1,000 P226R HSP pistols available engraved with the American flag and Homeland Security X of 1000. Additionally, each pistol comes in .40 S&W caliber and is engraved with serial number barcoding just like those which were shipped to DHS. The HSP also features the new DAK trigger, a stainless steel Nitron slide topped with SIGLITE night sights, and a light weight alloy frame with rail.
There is also a P229R HSP model available with the same features.

Going for 800 NIB on gunbroker right now one in 226 and other in 229. why get a plain jane 229 when you can get a limited edition with a BARCODE!!!

Very cool barcode just like the guns that only the agencies get issued

I don't own a S&W M&P or a Ruger SR9. I own other S&W and Ruger handguns so I'm sure both those models are excellent pistols.

But I never really had any desire to own either of those models. No matter how great they are, they just don't ring my chimes. SIGs do.

Why would someone pay more for Sierra Nevada than for Budweiser? They're similar products, generally of the same quality . But some people like Sierra Nevada's taste enough to pay more for it even though they're both just beer and both make you feel good.

Funny how people have differences in their tastes.

$400 difference?
Isn't it more like $200?
I think Sigs are worth the money.
I've always found them reliable, well built and easy to shoot well.

look around for deals, i got my LNIB P228 with 3 magazines and night sight for $525 from a local seller, and its worth every penny

If you like the configuration of the pistol, they are very good. I prefer striker fired guns. I like the XD best BUT if I had to carry a DA/SA duty gun a Sig would be at the top
of the list.

SIG PRO 2340 had interchangeable grip back straps before the S&W M&P line was born.
My 2340 in either .40 S&W or .357 SIG is the most accurate semi-auto I own - it is totally reliable. It cost me $506 +tax NIB about 6 years ago. I trust my life on it. Can't compare with a M&P - never owned one - sold a bunch when I worked in a gun shop - so held, stripped and assembled a couple dozen - not as impressive to me as claimed by some.

my sig p226 .40 has never failed to feed or fire even with some cheap used mags i bought. i have owned a few and they have all been great. that said when i bought my 226 i didn't carry, so now that i do i wish i would have bought the p229.

The answer is , the M&P is worth the money. The Sig is worth the money if you want a pretty gun to hang up on your wall. But the M&P does everything the SIg does and more for less money.

BTW.. The Sig is a real brick for conceal carry, I can carry a full sized frame M&P that weighs less then my aluminum frame Sig.

THis is coming from a guy who sold his Sig P229 Elite and now is a proud owner of a S&W M&P 9.

Based on my own personal experiences, the Sigs are worth the extra money. Not sure how much more, but easily +$200 or so. I love my M&Ps as well, but if I had to give up the M&Ps or the Sigs, the M&Ps would go without question.

The Sig's feel better in the hand, have been more accurate for me, and while I haven't put thousands of rounds through the M&P yet, I have with my Sigs and never had a single issue. 100% dead reliable, year after year after year. I hope, and expect, I will have similar performance with the M&Ps. And if I do, I'd still take the Sig over the M&P even at a premium price.

I can't comment on the SR9 as I have no first hand experience with them.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges since the M&P is a polymer frame gun while the P229 has a more expensive metal alloy frame. The Sig polymer frame gun is the SP2022 and is more comparably priced to the S&W. IF it is more expensive (probably not by much) yes I think it is worth the difference; but then you could guess my answer by my name ;)

One of my guns I've never had FTF or FTE has been my Sig 226. When I have the time to shoot competitively I grab my sig. I bought it used at a pawn shop. I immediately put a new spring kit in it, did a thorough cleaning and voila my targets slow fire are 3x3 post its at 15 yards.

Then again that's my favorite all metal gun. I do have an xd that I bought really cheap as a defense gun knowing that it would be taken and possibly never returned if something happened.

Worth the price?
It depends what you pay.
I saw this .40 226 with 4 magaznes at a gun show for $550 when I was not looking for a handgun, and I certainly was not looking for a foreign handgun. I paid for it and had it shipped to my local FFL who held it for me for 6 months while I obtained permission to buy a handgun from my local LEO.

Two of the magazines turned out to be 10 round 9mm, but still definately worth the price!

The grips came from the Hogue online auctin of seconds. Many think the Sig an ugly gun but I like it. Especially with the pretty blue grips.

Yes, they are worth the extra money

Yes, there are other very good guns out there. Especially if you want striker fired gun, Sig has nothing for you.

Buy used, you will find a really good deal if you are patient.
