Are SMGs going the way of the dinosaur?

here's some more reputable information about the nato pdw cartridge trials from jane's

before Fabrique Nationale bought out GIAT they were working on a 5.7mm GIAT round that was based on the 9mm case and could be converted to with a simple barrel change. that would be a lot easier for people to adopt but instead all these companies seem determined to design cartridges with odd dimensions that can't even be adapted to existing designs. so we not only get an unproven cartridge but unproven weapons systems as well. why not just work on testing and adopting a new NATO stanag 9mm armor-piercing round?

incidentally, i've always thought you had to have an, um, german bauhaus-isches aesthetik to appreciate h&ks but i think they've finally topped their P7s in terms of ugliness with their h&k ucp "ultimate combat pistol". http://thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=697242
anybody know anything about this one? looks like it could be P7 gas-delayed blowback operation.

A couple of our Secret Service customers said they've been issued the P90... and love it. It's a hell of a platform.

Phasing out 9mm? It's an old, old cartridge - a real dinosaur :).

Incidentally, how does 5.7 do out of a Five-seveN (I've always wanted one :) )? With only a pistol barrel, won't its primary advantage be gone?

Mulliga- 2100fps, 340lb-ft of muzzle energy. (versus ~2300fps out of the P90.) So not much is lost.

I want a FiveSeven too, really cool gun. Civilians CAN own them, it is only the AP ammo that is restricted...

and...

Winchester is now making non-AP hollowpoint 5.7x28mm ammo :) :) :)

As soon as it gets on the CA legal list, I will probally buy one. I just can't decide between the DAO and SA 'tactical' models! Wish it was like my Glock, which is essentially a light double action in operation.

I can't wait to see how accurate the FiveSeven is, I bet it's a laserbeam.
