Are the Sig cracked frame stories true, and do they replace the frame?

FYI..sprinco makes a buffered recoil rod (two stage) like the HK USP for the SIG.
A heavy spring for the last 1/4" of compression.

My first P226 developed a crack at the rear of the front right frame rail after 8,000-9,000 rounds (don't recall the exact number but it was in the 8,000s somewhere). Took photos (film, this was pre-digital cameras) but the images were blurry after being developed and the gun already sent to SIGARMS. They replaced the entire gun with a new one. Was shipped directly to me. This was in the early/mid '90s. W. German stamped, Herndon, checkered grips, no crud cuts.
