Are there any .45ACP Glock fans here?

I am thinking about buying a Glock to keep around the house for defense and for a woods gun. I am torn between a 9mm or 45ACP. I know that with recent advances in ammunition technology the 9mm has adequate stopping power but I still have more confidence in the stopping power of the 45 ACP. It will only be used for home defense and walking the trails and creeks in the woods. Does anyone else find themselves torn between the two for defense?
Well anyway, if I buy the 9mm it likely will be the G17 or G19. If I buy a 45, I can not decide which model, so I am looking for opinions based on your experience(s) with various 45 models. The G36 is out as I rented one and could not hit the broad side of a barn with it or control it well. My hands are on the small side of medium, so anyway what would be your suggestion for the stated purposes for a 45 Glock?

Yep, I like the G36 I have. It has a long front to back grip that isn't like anything else I've fired so if it doesn't suit you, I do understand. In my hands it does shoot surprisingly well, which is probably why I still own it.

I'm not a Glock owner, but I'm a .45ACP shooter. I've handled the various .45ACP Glocks over the years, the G21/G21SF/Gen 4 G21 and the matching G30 crowd, with the intention of buying one. I think Glock makes a solid product. The Gen 4 and SF models are a big improvement for me over the basic G21, but I still think they are too big and bulky for me. Looking down the top of the slide on a G21 makes me think what an F18 pilot must see as he lines up to land on an aircraft carrier. I also find the G30 family just too chunky for my tastes. I'm confident they are all solid performers, and if they didn't seem so outsized, I'd probably own one. As it is, I'd pick a .45 from most of the other makers, SIG, Beretta, H&K, FN, etc., before picking a Glock in .45ACP.

The 9MM Glock's fit my hands much better. If I were going to start shooting 9MM, the G17 and G19 would be near the top of my list.

If they all fit your hand, I'd think you'd be happy with anything from Glock.

I have a 30 for 20 years, and it still is a great little gun with a payload the size of many larger guns, and excellent accuracy.

I have a Glock 36 and like it okay.
I'm not thrilled with 9mm either.
You might consider the Glock 38 (45 GAP)
Same frame as a Glock 19, but with 8 + 1 of 45 GAP
I have a 38 and it is soft shooting.

Have a 21 Gen4 and a 30 Gen4, both are incredible shooters.

If I had to pick just one, I'd choose the 21.

I can't argue that a 9mm is sufficient for home defense as well (I own a 17 Gen4), but the Gen4 G21 is a VERY soft shooting .45, really doesn't recoil much more at all than my G17. But the .45 really shines as a woods/trail gun because of two things. The first is big, heavy bullets and a 230gr at 950+ fps is good medicine for any medium sized game. Plus there are even 250/255gr hardcasts for the .45 ACP.

Second is the ability to shoot .45 Super, which is an interesting cartridge. As is it's no joke and Underwood/Buffalo Bore claims their .45 Super is safe in Glocks. If you handload and have the ability to run a comp, it can exceed 800-1000 ft-lbs with bullets ranging from 185-300grs.

To answer the first question, yes I am a glock fan in 45 acp. I bought a gen 4 21 and have put about 500 230 gn rn plated through it without a hiccup. It is a rather large gun but I wear Xl gloves and have no problem gripping the pistol. I like the capacity to size ratio and it is rather soft shooting for a 45, my brother has a 30 and that's where I noticed how soft they actually shoot. Not nearly as nice as a 1911 but for just about double the capacity you can't go wrong, even price is decent. Never thought I'd own a glock but this one was calling my name, no regrets on purchasing the 21 only wish the 41 was out when I bought it!

I had a 21sf for a while, and my friend recently bought a 41 which I've fired quite a bit.

As pointed out the 21's slide is designed to be used as a picnic table. It's the widest slide I've ever seen. Ergos are so-so and I never got used to the gun. The 41 is lighter and that's a thinner slide but the trigger needs a lot of work. It's just too mushy.

Both shoot lead bullets beautifully though, which is a plus. Ammo capacity is impressive.

If I were to remotely consider a Glock again, it would be the 30s. Thinner slide but still a standard double stack.

I have the 30S and it's a great compromise between size and firepower. I ended up heating and reshaping the grip to get rid of the Glock hump and now it fits me almost perfectly. However, if I was going to buy a large frame 45ACP without the consideration of concealed carry it would be a FNX 45. The grip is much slimmer than any Glock that hasn't been modified and it holds a couple more rounds standard.

I have a glock 36 and a glock 21gen4. I use the 21 for target shooting. Also have a 1911.
I like the .45 round it has a long history of stopping power and accuracy. I reload for all
of them. The 36 is when im carrying.

I've had my G21 Gen 3 for 13 years now.
I have put many thousands of rounds thru it. It is and always had been 100% reliable.
I have a drop in Bar-Sto bbl. for it as well that I use for lead bullet shooting. It is extremely accurate with a 200 gr. LSWC.
One of the "softest" shooting .45 ACP pistols out there.

My firast Glock was a G21. ABSOLUTLEY LOVED that weapon. In the end, my budget being as tiny as it is, I made the decision to trade it for a G17 for the reduced ammo cost. Don't get me wrong, I love my G17 too, but it's just not the same. I'd take that G21 again in a heartbeat.

I just switched from a 1911 (Kimber CDP Pro) to a Glock 30SF as my main carry gun. The Kimber was a great gun, but I got tiered of the 30 minute cleaning sessions, and I want to buy a matching full size and I couldn't squeze another Kimber into the budget. I shoot my 30SF as good as my Kimber, it's just not as pretty. So what, it works, and it makes big holes.

If you can't get with the Glock Ergonomics (possible if the 36 didn't fit) you might check out the Smith M & P. I'm not a fan, they just feel cheaper to me, but it's a good platform in .45. And they all need trigger work. The FNH and HK are cool too, but their triggers can also be an acquired taste. I still think no one has striker fired triggers down the way Glock does.

Glock 21 is great if you don't have small hand. The only gun bigger that I've handled was the FN 45. That thing is even bigger.

Glocks are just so easy to work with. Love 'em, hate 'em, or just accept 'em. They work, hold a good capacity and are easy to maintain. Plus you can walk into any place that sells holsters and find what you need.

I had the Glock 21& loved it. But I went to the Glock 30 & found it fit me better. I do like the Glocks. But have found out that out of all the .45s out there, I still grab my 1911 if I am going to be doing some work that calls for the .45acp.:)

Every response is interesting an helpful.

I guess my main concern is the grip size and controllability (is that a word)? Weight being the other. I may carry it for a few hours at a time around the house and walking the property. I need something that has stopping power, that I can grip and and is stone cold reliable which other than grip Glock seems to have covered. I am like a lot of others who are not in love with Glock but realize it is a reliable weapon that won't hurt your feelings if it falls onto the rocks and into the creek (so to speak) . I appreciate the input and point of view from each of you.

I own five .45acp Glocks - 21, 21SF, 30, 30SF, and 36. All are Gen3 models. The 36 conceals best, so it was IWB for our outdoor Easter gathering yesterday, loaded with two rounds of CCI shotshells atop 5 of Hornady Critical Defense. Rattlesnake season is upon us. A G30 is usually in my ConsoleVault, and is the one I prefer to shoot most. I also own three 1911s.

You might want to consider a G23. It's the .40S&W versionof the G19. Add a LW 40-9 conversion barrel and shoot 9mm for practice.

If I were using it as a woods gun, I'd go with 10mm or 357 SIG. But to answer your question, I've had a 21SF and 30SF before and both were excellent. I shot the 30SF better and I miss that one a lot

I have Clock's in 9 45 and 10. The g-21 is a great gun if your hands fit. 9 is enough for human threats and 45 is no advantage over 9 bigger stuff. Pick either one you like, then get a 10 mm or bigger for the bigger stuff

Why buy a gun you don't feel comfortable shooting? Small-medium size hands are not really a good combo if you can't shot it well. You will lose nothing by renting or holding a M&P 45. If it happens to have the small size grip on guarantee you'll like.
I wouldn't recommend the 10mm because it too has a large grip. I know cause I have one.

My hands are average but shall we say uh, fat. I had a G-21 and wanted a 30 but the grips just didn't fit me. I love my G-36. No problems and it is the largest gun I am willing to carry. Feels nice in my hand. Shoots well with no problems.
