- 9mm cause it's FAST and I have 15 of 'em!
- No, .45 because it's a freakin' mushroom.
- .357 all the way... beats 'em all.
- Aw, .380 will do fine - it's about shot placement.

None of us is certain because it's all sooooo uncertain. I don't know what caliber this BG was using, but check out this story:

Mt. Olive Police Issue Murder Warrant For Suspect In Shooting

POSTED: 5:03 pm EDT July 6, 2005

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Mount Olive police have issued a murder warrant for a man who they suspect shot and killed a woman while she was in an apartment last week.

Police charged Richard Lee Swinson, 26, with one count of murder and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling in connection with the death of Jennifer Louise McAuthur, 22. They have not located Swinson, however.

McArthur was killed when one of several bullets fired from the parking area of a local apartment complex went through the wall of the apartment and struck her on June 30.

Investigators said McArthur was visiting friends at the Mount Olive Court Apartments when she was struck by a bullet during a hail of gunfire.

"The bullets came through the walls and the windows," Mount Olive Police Chief Emmett Bellree said. "She was struck, and she died shortly thereafter."

Police said that Swinson should be considered armed and dangerous. Swinson is thought to be in the Goldsboro, Mar Mac or Dudley area, police said.

No other occupants of the apartment were injured.

Actually, no.

I rather enjoy the caliber and ballistics wars because the threads are very often quite informative.

That's why these forums exist and why we're all here; to learn and discuss! :)

Hey Bethoven, lighten up... ;) I certainly agree and I know that the "wars" must continue.

I was just trying to make the point that in the real world, ya' juss don't know...

Frandy, as a wise man in Oreygun sez, "bullets are like medicine, they don't always work the same on different people." :D

Have seen all kinds of stuff in my gig, .32s bounce off heads (only placement counts, right?), .223s bounce off the brims of hats or be deflected off watches, and .45s, *gasp* fail to "drop them all", etc.

I'm tired of these skirmishes about itty-bitty ballistics, like the .45 acp vs. 9mm. Now, start a discussion about .338 Lapua vs. .375 H&H, toss in a bit about L-factors and Taylor KO's... then you've got something worth arguing about.

:D

Sick yes. I hate .40 S&W. It's a barney fife caliber.

Just remember, if I hit you with a .22 and I miss you with a .44 mag it's all over......

I'll take my Brown 1911 or Glock 17/19 anyday over barney with his Glock 22/23, because shot placement, NOT caliber is where the real war is faught. :)

I look nothing like 'Barney Fife' and I carry a G23 on occasion-hasn't failed me in over 16,000 rounds. I kinda like that. Shoots 13 fairly big bullets. I kinda like that too.
Your post is *faught*-oops, I mean fraught with over-generalised bs.

Not at all. It makes interesting reading. That being said, the .32 or .380 in your hand in time of need is far more powerful than that hand cannon home in the safe.

You forgot one...

10mm: it'll turn your opponent into a squishy puddle of red goo while irradiating the surrounding 1/4-mile area with COSMIC RADIATION. :p

Nah...this is one of those archetypal topics that needs to pop its head up every now and then. Lots of humor, a bit of suprising insight, and a few folks get insulted and huffy. What more could you ask for? Thank goodness Al Gore invented this internet thing!

Personally, I don't see THAT much of a difference between the "service calibers" (9mm/.357Sig/.40/.45) that I'd choose a pistol solely based on what it's chambered for. I shop by platform, not payload.

All your calibers are belong to us!

>>>Shoots 13 fairly big bullets. I kinda like that too.<<<

Like I said. It's all about shot placement. .40 S&W is inherently LESS accurate than 9mm or .45. Why not just shoot it in Sig .357 instead? I think I'd take a Kimber 1911 in .22LR over that 22/23 and just make head shots all day long.

Kinda funny...

At the last technical meeting I went to, the same story played out. Someone would get up and brief a deeply technical subject--no questions or discussion.

Then someone got up and briefed a very complicated and technical topic having to do with atmoshperic measurements and prediction. We had a LONG discussion and lots of questions. Because, don'tcha know, EVERYONE'S an expert on the weather. It ended up with a lot of sheepish people getting a lot more complicated and in depth information than ANYONE wanted to hear on the subject. Turns out the guy was a PHd and had been working in this field for his whole life. The stuff that appeared simple and intuitive was actually very complicated. All the simple stuff that people proposed had already been thoroughly investigated and implemented decades ago...

Same with caliber wars. Although it is a very complicated and technical topic EVERYONE'S an expert on "stopping power" because in their hearts, everyone believes that it's a very simple topic and that easily measured parameters hold the key to the whole problem.

Shot Placement!!!!!!!!!

Seems like every caliber war comes down to shot placement and the common theme is that shot placement is only possible with the smaller calibers. I say a well placed .45 trumps a well placed 380. BTW, my main carry is a 9MM Kahr (compromise for size).

Hell if it can put a hole in a man sized target at 30 yards, and a head-sized target at 10 yards - I don't much care what caliber it is.

If you can't put someone out of commission from 10 yards away with six bullets of any type - I think that's more a user issue than a weapon issue.

Most confrontations that would involve a handgun actually take place at some pretty short ranges, and anything at a distance, one would be well advised to take cover and look for a way out instead of going cowboy on it.

So it's more a personal preference than anything else, what round someone uses, an individual choice they no doubt wanna share, and everyone wants to feel what they carry is somehow superior to what you're carrying.

It's human nature, meh..

Calibers eh?

Since I live in an urbanized environment, and my combat doctrine wont let me shoot past 300-400 meters, I think the best caliber for a rifle and squad machine gun would be from the intermediate range. Preferably 5.56mm NATO or 7.62mm Soviet because they are the most common cartridges. And instead of having marksmen/snipers in the squad, I'd rather have 2-3 full time grenadiers firing this 40mm monster!

So you want penetration? You got it! *THUMP, THUMP, THUMP*
