Collusion

Collusion defeats trust, every time.

Some of the software we've done (places I've worked) has been specifically aimed at collusion detection.

You'd be amazed at the amount of theft and "falling off trucks" that is rigged by employees to outsiders. Shoplifting is a fraction of that.

Collusion pierces even the tightest security. Once you have someone on the inside, you've beaten the trust system.

You punch a hole in the system ("only federal employees are exempted") and you're vulnerable.

There's just nothing as creepy (in security) as running the bad guy's information against your employee database and getting hits on "same phone number" or "same address" or "used to have same phone/address" or "same license plate" or "lives three doors from . . . " and so on.

And that's just casino security. Only 3,000 employees to worry about.

Now try that with an airline having offices all over the country. All over the world.

There is simply NO physical security that's going to get the job done. Collusion defeats everything.

The only answer is a trust system that's more trouble to defeat than it's worth.

I'm guessing they're not up to that task.

Bummer.

A very wise man (my Dad) told me: "Locks are for honest people".

Any security system can (and will) be defeated. That is why it is foolish to place full trust in any system or delegate your safety to another.

This is nothing surprising to me, an airline employee.

In this business, there is simply no viable way to screen everyone before they go into the sterile area. The ramp agents who move baggage, fuel trucks, provisioning trucks, cargo, mail, etc, are required to go into and out of the sterile area several times a day. We could not possibly institute a security system that screens everyone, every time, and still allows us to run our airline normally.

Look at the federal prison system. It is one of the most secure environments in the US, yet contraband (drugs, alcohol) is still smuggled into the prison.

We could make the airline business 100% secure. We could also make airplane crashes more survivable, but the customers wouldn't like the 10,000% increase in ticket prices.

When I checked my gun coming home, the lady didnt want to check the chamber. Said something about not wanting to look at it, but i could have had it fully loaded and had a round chambered.

Why didnt he give me one? :(

I'm wondering how hard it would be to get guns over by boat. Also, I heard guns go for cheap in Mexico, like Uzis and the like. They're illegal there, but they get them imported really easily due to loose ports and the like.

What would even happen if I just got a sea cargo container, and filled it with AKs? Would it even get searched?

I'm just wondering, because guns ARE going to be illegal someday, you can garuantee it.

Yep, even with Archimedes as chief siege engineer, the Romans bought off one guy and he let them into Syracuse.

The solutions include:
1. Minding our own business
2. lots of private civil defense equipment and shelters, like the Swiss
3. Letting people (like airline pilots and ship captains) arm themselves without harassing them or putting stupid rules on them.

The solutions do not include an all-powerful surveillance/ID system, because it will only work on honest people.

What they did is a well known secret at the airports.
When I worked at one I could have taken anything in at anytime.
I daily carried my tool bag into the security areas.
There are known gang members working as baggage handlers.
There is gang graffiti inside some airplane baggage compartments.
Airport security is just like gun control.
It only applies to the honest people.
The bad guys will do as they please.

This stuff would be a lot easier to stop, that is if when they found the guy they called the news crews, then executed him right then and there. You can bet no one would try it again in the near future. Sometimes I almost wish it could happen that way, but then I remember we are the good guys.

While in reality no security system is infallible, the situation today certainly could be tightened up much more than it is now. I have witnessed El Al security in action at JFK many times over the years. It is very doubtful this would happen on that particular airline. Not saying it could not happen, but man do they have their stuff together when it comes to security for the airline. Of course, they have a ploicy of shoot first, ask questions once you have landed back in Israel - and I kid you not on that little gem. They have standing orders to do such, and the aircraft on the ground is to take off with them almost immediately after such an incident. Besides that they all have diplomatic immunity. (or at least it was like that up until about 3-4 years ago, and i doubt it has changed to their disadvantage.)

All the best,
Glenn B
