Robber shot during home invasion

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- When a team of robbers returned to a Rowan County home police say they'd robbed up earlier in the week, the homeowners were ready Friday.

One suspect is in the hospital after being shot by the couple's son. Two other people are in custody.

It happened on Corriher Grange Road near Highway 152.

The house was first held up Monday night. NewsChannel 36 spoke exclusively with the Deadmon family after the first home invasion. They told us how the robbers forced them to open the safe at gunpoint. They reported the robbery to police, and they believe that's why the suspects returned.

"He told my husband they had come back to kill," Sherry Deadmon said, speaking for her husband Randy, who has a disability that affects his speech.

It was Randy and his son John-Ross who were home Friday afternoon when two men arrived.

Randy explained how one of the robbers grabbed his son by the collar and lead him into the house. He said both men had guns.

There was a scuffle -- pushing, punching, and then shooting. The family had placed several shotguns around the house because of Monday's crime.

When police arrived at the home, they found one man shot in the garage. He was wearing black clothing, a black mask and a bulletproof vest.

John-Ross Deadmon told investigators he believed he had shot that man. He said a second man had run from the scene, while exchanging gunfire with him.

Police believe they arrested that second man in Kannapolis a short time later. They also arrested a woman, who was found in the vehicle investigators connected to the crime scene.

The wounded man was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center where he is recovering. Names will be released after charges are filed against all three suspects.

The Deadmon's son, John-Ross, was taken to the hospital with some bruises and scrapes from the fighting. His pastor tells NewsChannel 36 he was shaken, but home Friday night, along with his parents, who are unharmed.

"Thank God we're saved," Sherry Deadmon said. "I forgive them, but they need Jesus."

Wow. I'm glad the family is unharmed. I hope they don't let these thugs back on the street with a slap on the wrist. I somehow doubt they learned their lesson, and it's truly a shame their family have to live in fear of a retaliation.

I also think its kind of ridiculous theyre waiting to release the criminals names, however they have no reserve publishing the names of everyone in the victims family and their address for the world to see..

Don't scatter guns around the house. Keep them ON YOU or right next to you. Nobody should have been able to get in at all, let alone get in twice. They're incredibly lucky they didn't get slaughtered.

some BGs aren't as stupid as people think. Some are smart people who get into bad business. They plan everything, scope out everything, and take precautions to save their asses from getting shot and arrested.

They're lucky they made it past the first invasion! I wonder why the BGs left any witnesses the first time if they were clearly willing to come back later and "clean up." Any words of wisdom for dealing with the BG with Body Armor. Is this a case where a rifle round would undoubtedly be better than a handgun ammunition in penetration? I suppose 12 ga buckshot would get stopped, but perhaps the blunt force trauma would be enough to disable the BG?

Great argument for using an AR for home defense. Multiple assailants, one or more wearing body armor, all armed. An EBG would sure help even such odds.

Oh, but I forgot...no honest man needs more than 10 rounds in a gun.

Mr. Davis,
I was thinking along the same lines here, a semi-automatic rifle would be very helpful in that situation. I think it's pretty uncommon to run across a BG with body armor, but it never hurts to be over-prepared. Then again, I've had my AR resting against the couch 2 feet away as I browsed the forums tonight and watched some sports on the TV.

This brings some interesting questions to mind. Due to wall penetration issues with rounds like 9mm, .357. 40 S&W, 45ACP and even 12ga buckshot a popular piece of home defense advice has been to use a AR15 platform gun with fragable ammo. How would this work against body armor? I've also been a fan of 12ga bird or small game shot (#7 thru #9 shot) but how well would that conpare .223 fragable against body armor at close range? I guess the moral of the story is to practice failure drills 2 to center mass and one to the head. I also recently heard the military does a failure drill of 2 to center mass and one or more to the head or pelvic area.

dang, body armor? That makes think... I knew I had a defensive reason for the psl. But really, body armor? Holy crap I did not think I would ever have to shoot at someone wearing any, I guess when I practice it will now be "Anybody comes through that door, you give 'em two in the chest and one in the head. You understand?".

According to the newspaper articles I've read in this past year on incidents of violent crime like this one, body armor seems to be in much more prevalent use by the criminals than it used to be. It's really quite scary.

DR. ZUBRATO - " ... I somehow doubt they [the thugs] learned their lesson, ..."

Probably not. Bad guys, even when arrested and imprisoned, almost always continue being bad guys. They just make better plans for "next time."

I wonder if the anti gunners will see this as a reason to ban body armor, just goes to show you that we lowly citizens need guns that will penetrate body armor. This is the first example where I have seen the BG wearing armor, I hope it doesn't become too normal.

I havent really picked out the defensive round type I'm going to carry yet. Right now, just carrying 124 gr 9mm.

So if people are allowed to carry ammo that penetrates body armor...what happens when they shoot someone who is not wearing body armor? What are the added risks, if you miss or the rounds go thru walls or thru the perp? Or would they not do so?

And just to point out...there have been more cases lately where spree shooters have been wearing armor. I believe that the guy who shot up the women's gym was.

Sounds like the BG also needed a helmet like Napoleon Dynamite in addition to his body armor. I can't wait to see the look on his face while the kid is testifying.

If it's a IIIA vest, it is rated to stop 12-gauge without excessive backface deformation, AFAIK. Don't count on it knocking the bad guy down.

BTW, the criminal who was shot and disabled in this case (presumably by a shotgun) was wearing a vest. Vests cover only the torso; legs, arms, and head are still unprotected, unless the attacker is wearing a helmet and EOD suit or something.

Body armor: if you ever face a situation like these people, and don't have a good rifle, then shot placement counts.

The homeowners are lucky to be alive, sounds like God was watching over them. The criminals were in control of the situation from the start, intending to kill these people, yet somehow ended up shot/in jail.

1st, glad the family's ok.

2nd, in NC, wearing body armor during the commission of a felony kicks in an extra (I believe) 5 yrs onto the sentence.

Hmm, burglary, armed robbery, probably attempted murder + body armor penalty. Hopefully they'll lock these dirtbags up for a long time.

Glad the family is OK BGs wearing body armor are getting pretty common down here in Florida. The tokarev 7.62 X 25 is a good choice for that application as is the 357 magnum FMJ Buffalo Bore coming out of the muzzle at 1700fps.
