haha I didn't add the SIG 556 because its system IS very similar to the XCR, a modified AK piston. The SR doesn't have a select fire option that I know of...but the line is pretty new and Ruger does have a lot more intended for it. SO a select fire line for LE isn't that unlikely.

Reasons for the rifles I chose:

LWCR-nickel palted upper internals, ability to fully disasemble the piston, new style barrel (forget the exact term, not mil-spec though) that lasts for 20,000 plus rounds, 6.8 caliber.

XCR-amazing and cheap conversion ability, FAL/AK style bolt system and charging handle, did extremely well in military trials (from what I read) but was beat out by the SCAR, and supposedly improved ergonomics

SR 556-chrome lined everything, only partially able to dissaemble the piston, runs for thousands of rounds with out cleaning, comes fully done up out of the box.

and all within my price range :)

I personally like 'military pattern rifle' for rifles that are based on military designs but don't have selective fire capability.

I thought SR 556 was for the SIG rifle too. I prefer my military pattern rifles to be based on designs that have actually been thru military trials.

so what is the correct name for all the semi-automatic "military-style" rifles out there?
How about we just call them "rifles" or "carbines" if you really want to be descriptive put "semi-auto" in front of either of those and you wouldn't be telling a lie.

If you can get select fire why screw around with the 556? Get a Sig 550, hands down the better rifle.

If it has to be from the list the LWRC is probably the best. I'll jump on the XCR bandwagon when a military user picks it up.

Really, calling them "military style rifles" isn't a very good description either. After all, the military still uses such weapons as the Remington 700.

I prefer the evil black rifle term myself. To the unintiated (i.e. most media and anti-gun types) a pic of my wood stock M1A with 22 inch barrel looks like a "hunting rifle". But put the modernized stock on it and those same people will call it an "assault weapon". Ditto for rifles like the mini14, SKS, etc.

By the way, why not go with the Sig 556?

How about just "rifle". Why a special designation if there is a list to look at? An adjective isn't necessary.

I dunno...I've seen the piston driven bushmasters CHOKE on the firingline over and over again when an almost identical bushmaster with the standard AR setup worked all day...that didn't inspire my confidense in it...and I owned an AR180 at one point believing it was supirior in reliabillity due to the piston system....till it had occassional finnicky problems MY RRA standard A2 AR 16" carbine NEVER had (never a jam FT or FTE EVER! in like 2500 rounds!) So I don't know that I'd choose the heavier system with more parts...but that said the Ruger I got ahold of did look pretty darn well made and seem to run great...so if I had to gamble on it I guess that one!

Some excellent thoughts on terminology here. And Dr. Tad perfectly explained our aversion to the label "assault rifle" and media distortion of us and our rifles. Same thing happened decades ago when antigunners basically hung the term "Saturday Night Special" on ALL pistols. And "gun nut" instead of enthusiast. Words do hurt and we have to be careful. Maybe this thread should be called "This is my Rifle - Don't call it an assault rifle".

Anyway, no vote in the poll for me, I have not warmed up to ARs/knockoffs with pistons yet. Fine for others I guess but no need here.

Except the Sig has been around a long time and the Swiss military uses it, its also higher quality. The ACR is unproven and not used by any military.

I wasn't talking about the ACR, but the XCR. While I know the Sig has been around longer I prefer the XCR for the reasons listed and it has a charging handle on the left side. The XCR did well in military trials, but lost out to the SCAR..go figure its FN (which I love but they over charge extremely).

Just because a military doesn't use it doesn't mean its not a well rounded solid weapon. Remember LE use a lot of rifles as well. They are more precise than shotguns and SWAT teams vary greatly in what they use. For example, where I'm from if it uses .223 the officer can use it. So you'll get a variety of DI and piston rifles.

i dont see any assaut rifle in the pull... all i see are semi auto rifles....

Really? That has already been addressed. First two have select fire variants. The SR is a newer line with a lot of products ahead of it according to Ruger, select fire being possible for LE.
