Carjacking Victim Shoots at Suspect in South Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN – Memphis police say a crime victim turned the tables on a carjacker Wednesday morning. Surveillance video shows the victim firing a gun at the carjacker outside a BP gas station on East Mallory in South Memphis around 6:30 a.m.

Police say the victim was about to pump gas when the carjacker held him up with a shotgun. The victim told the carjacker the keys to his vehicle were in his gas cap. Police say when the carjacker reached to grab those keys, the victim pulled out his own gun and started shooting. The carjacker then ran north on Lauderdale Street.

Police say the carjacker left a gold Acura TL at the gas station. Police the Acura was carjacked from a woman leaving her gym at 6548 Quince Road around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Lt. Darren Goods investigates carjackings and robberies with the Safe Streets Task Force. He says criminals often steal cars to commit other crimes. He says, "Bad guys will commit a carjacking or steal a car and use those vehicles in other crimes, whether it be some type of theft, another type of robbery or something along those lines."

Lt. Goods said the carjacker had an accomplice at the gas station who did not take part in the crime. Police believe they have that man in custody. They think he and the other carjacker may be to blame for more carjackings in Memphis this month. However, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, the man in custody had not been charged and the carjacker was still on the loose.

Lt. Goods said the surveillance video taken at the BP gas station will help put the carjacker behind bars, if he is arrested. Lt Good said, "More times than not, it does become very valuable in the actual identification, prosecution and successful conviction in a lot of cases."

Lt. Goods said the victim has a handgun permit and was legally carrying the weapon.

Armed man repels gunman at gas station
Shotgun-wielding carjacker runs off under defending fire

By Hank Dudding (Contact)
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

A man buying gas in South Memphis early Tuesday surprised an armed carjacker by pulling a gun and firing at least two shots at him.

The carjacker ran away from Haile's BP, 563 E. Mallory, leaving behind a gold Acura that police said had been stolen in a carjacking earlier at 6548 Quince.

"He tried to hijack me and rob me," said Charles Todd, 64, who had arrived at the station just before 6 a.m. to fill a gas can. "I had to defend myself. He had a rifle."

Shortly before 8 a.m., Todd sat quietly near his black Toyota Tacoma, a lawn mower in the bed, as police investigated the scene. Customers came and went, filling their cars with gas and buying cigarettes and snacks, despite the police cars lining the parking lot.

Berkhanu Fekadu, 38, a clerk at the BP, was inside the store when the shooting occurred.

"I heard the sound of guns, somebody shooting," he said. "I just heard, 'Boom! Boom!'"

Fekadu ran outside in time to see the carjacker running away as Todd hurried to ask Fekadu to call police.

Security video from the store shows the carjacker pulling the gun from the Acura, then confronting Todd with a gun at the gas pumps.

Todd then takes cover behind the pumps as he fires at the dodging suspect, who then runs out of the frame after he has had enough.

Police found no blood at the scene and didn't believe the carjacker was hit by the shots. Officers searched the area nearby but found no sign of the suspect, who ran north on Lauderdale.

Todd has a permit to carry the gun, police said.

Tsegaye Haile, 42, the BP's owner, took the incident in stride, saying he has gotten used to the unusual at the store at East Mallory and Lauderdale.

"This is a hard corner," he said.

More fun in Mogadishu on the Mississippi.

With luck, this carjacker won't move to Knoxville and carry out worse actions, like the last set of infamous Memphis carjackers did.

One may argue about Mr. Todd's accuracy (good-luck shooting during a huge adrenaline spike) but we can all agree he has stones for pulling on a carjacker with a shotgun.

Buy that man a drink.

Drawing against a shotgun, MAN he has a pair.

Good move though, distracting the Scum Perp.

2 thoghts on this quote:

1) essentially, a carjacker gets his carjacked car, carjacked? Nice.:D
2) if he already has a car he carjacked, why is he trying to get a second one? is he trading up, or does he know a trick I dont about how to drive 2 cars at once down to the chop-shop?

Man, these criminals get dumber by the day (not that thats a bad thing, either)

either way.good job on the victims part, but NOT being a victim.

My thought is that the acura was running low on gas so instead of paying (criminals are cheap) for gas he thought it would be easier to steal a new car.

Another thought, maybe they wanted to take 2 cars to the chop shop so the the other BG was going to drive the acura and the guy that was shot at wanted to get another car.

acting calmly while facing a 12gauge barrel is definitely gutsy....

would be great to get a glimpse of the vid, as to find out why he did
not hit him from point blank.

give that man a beer.

This situation is one reason why I just set the nozzle to pump without me having to hold it. I usually stand near the front of my car while waiting for the click from the nozzle when it auto stops. That way I don't have to be concentrating on filling up the tank.

Been accosted by too many beggars wantin' money for beer or gas to do otherwise.

People in Florida are too stupid to use those kinds of nozzles. Most stations down here have disabled that feature, so you have to hold the nozzle the whole time.

I wouldn't recommend taking cover behind a gas pump during a gunfight

Which would you choose when the choice is between standing by a gas pump during the gunfight with nothing between you and your opponent or standing behind the gas pump and having some degree of concealment?

Hey, the gunfight started at the gas pumps. You're at the gas pumps no matter what you do. Besides, behind, in front of... it doesn't matter if you don't have better cover available.

OK, you're pumping gas. Guy comes at you with a shotgun. You've got ten feet to travel to take cover behind your vehicle. You've got two feet to travel to get a pump between you and the shotgun. One step. Which is the better option?

Ever shot a gasoline can? Did it catch on fire? Not unless you were using tracers or were close enough that the muzzle flash ignited fumes. Buckshot and slugs are not going to do the trick.

64 year old man, taking on a guy with a shotgun! he is one tough old codger! CONGRADULATIONS! to bad he didn't hit the perp, but hey, under those circumstanses, i am not going to say i would do better. i would buy tham man a beer or two!
