We are planning to invite Rudy Waldinger of Defensive Firearms Training in Fresno CA, to Portland to provide some training courses. If they are popular these courses will become a regular event.

Rudy is well qualified by his background to provide both basic and combat instruction with pistol, carbine and rifle. His courses graduate from mild to wild.

The courses will be held at a well-equipped local range within 45 minutes driving time of downtown Portland. The range is equipped with an advanced turning target system.

Rudy and I still have to work out the final details, such as the price of the course including his travel etc, but in the past a three day advanced pistol course cost about $600. When you consider there will be no travel and hotel fees involved, because Rudy is coming to us, this is a bargain.

To save THR's space please PM me if you are interested. General comments for the information of other members can, of course, be posted here.

We are trying to get at least two courses, perhaps a basic and an advanced pistol course, completed before the rain starts.

Not Tri-County. A new range complex out West with turning targets. We have agreement in principle for our use - awaiting confirmation and a timetable on individual range availability. I will provide photos when we have official confirmation.

I need to be testing for interest as soon as possible so that we can get Rudy to make a slot for us in his schedule. This training will be good value because we get the service of a professional trainer and avoid the travel cost of going to an out-of-state facility. It will cost a few dollars more each to pay for Rudy's travel but it would cost us a lot more money to travel to an out-of-state training center and pay for hotel accommodation.

Please let me know which course you would be interested in and I will work to put something together.

I have attended Rudy's advanced pistol course. By the end of the course I thought I had been in combat for a day, my "magazine thumb" was green with brass stains and my trigger finger was sore. Great course.

Rudy' website is linked in the first post.

I have a meeting soon and will see if the owner is OK with providing information.

Joey,
Here is a photo of the range with construction still taking place. Since there has already been a public announcement I can tell you it is the Columbia County LE Range Complex. It is a magnificent facility that puts Oregon on the map for what could be one of the best LE facilities on the West Coast.

overview_web.jpg

The range has a 20 target, 50 meter, pistol range (that may not be available for civilian use) and two smaller ranges where the construction equipment is working. There will be a 200 meter rifle range in the right-hand bay. Presently, the range is 12 acres, in the future it will be expanded to 40 acres.

I understand that when the appropriate use regulations have been worked out the range will be available for public use. We will have to provide approved Range Officers and there will probably be a small daily use fee per shooter. Users will have to maintain a high level of responsibility and care for the equipment. They will also be responsible for a thorough clean up at the end of the day. Range scheduling will be arranged to fit in with the needs of LE. - But fellows, where else will you get a chance to shoot at a range like this?

I am working on this project now because getting permission to use the range and scheduling Rudy are both long lead-time events. I would appreciate your expressions of interest NOW to go ahead with the work involved.

Yes - the range is built in a 40 foot deep hole !!!!! The earth moving truck at the back of the range has tires that must be six foot in diameter.

Mr. Rogers, please keep us posted as to location and anticipated opening dates so us civilian types can make our contribution of lead and copper into those berms.

The range is at co-ordinates 45.54.37N 122.49.52W on Google Earth. It is 29 miles from downtown Portland as the crow flies.

The range opened officially on the 25th of July. There is still work in progress which will probably cause some delay for civilian use. The owners, Columbia County Sheriff's Dept., are the nicest people who really want the population to share the benefits of this great range.

I spoke to Rudy Waldinger on Monday. He can set up a 3 day Defensive Handgun Course at the new Columbia County Range Complex around mid-September. Usually his 3-day courses run through Saturday/Sunday/Monday but he does have some flexibility depending on demand. This course costs $600 and it requires 1000 rounds of ammunition. The range facilities are excellent with a turning target system and convenient location (29 miles from Portland).

Rudy can alter the pace of the course to accommodate the training level of the students. He normally plans on 10 people per course but he will accept six students this time for his first visit to Portland.

In order to move ahead with the planning I would appreciate expressions of interest as soon as possible. With all of the active contributors from Oregon that we have on THR I hope you will come forward to get this great training opportunity off the ground.

Please contact me as soon as you can with either request for a place on the course or to let me know why this course will not work for you. Any feedback will be very useful.
