I subscribe to the idea of being less of a target than the other people around you. There are a myriad of ways to do this dependent on your personal factors and area.
Here in Houston the biggest danger points for me are stopping to get gas (carjackings) and commuting in traffic (road rage shootings) 30 miles each way 5 days a week though downtown Houston . My biggest focus has been on doing things to make me less of a target than my fellow commuters, the Gray Man theory as others have espoused. I drive a nondescript car, don't speed anymore than anyone else, don't make eye contact or do anything to stand out, etc etc...
At the pump I choose a station right across from the police substation and am always armed when I am out of the car. The car is locked at all times when I am out, and I never unlock any door but the passenger door unless I have riders. I rarely go out to eat using Door Dash or similar, order all my groceries for delivery and pickup and limit the places I have to go. In a few years when I retire from the college I work I'll move back to outer BFE and this routine will likely not be needed to this level ever again.
