im wondering how quickly you think a new ban will pass if the bad guys win.

There are still some Republicans in Congress. Even if Obama wins that doesn't change much.

There have been 2 AWB's introduced since the last one expired and neither of them got off the ground.

Always a possibility but I'm not worried about gun bans.

I'm worried about AMMO bans. Lots of that starting up and no one is even paying attention.

You said it. Onerous "safe storage" regulations, sky-high taxes and outright bans.

I fear an AWB. Like, I have bad dreams about it. I have the misfortune to be young and more interested in semi-auto rifles. I wonder why the generation that came before me didn't preserve my rights for me.

I wonder if I'll be able to own any interesting rifles when I'm a bit older.

Mid summer 2009. Shotguns like the Saiga 12, can be effectively banned by the whim of a new AG. Any imported firearm can also be banned at the whim of a new AG, who would determine if they have a "sporting purpose". The current administration did enough, as you may recall, including a barrel once a part of a "machine gun" as aprohibited part. There was also, I hope you haven't forgotten, the proposed regulations by OSHA, that would have made it very difficult to store or stockpile ammunition or reloading supplies.

What do you think will happen? The administration before last, did every thing they could to restrict the sale of firearms, even banning imports from at least two major countries. Laws were passed, but much was banned without any new law at all. In fact, an entire federal agency joined a lawsuit against gun manufacturers, and used the promise of a lawsuit dismissal, and a threat to continue as a club to beat and intimidate gun manufacturers from revealing gun purchase information, which is supposed to be confidential with the very people trying to ban as many guns as possible.

So, nothing has to pass Congress for guns to be banned.

so ill buy the mini now and some high cap mags. then my 223 bolt gun for yotes. having the same ammo cant hurt.

I'm pretty sure that the second Obama is sworn in he will issue an executive order to round up all guns and have them destroyed. There will be nothing we can to do stop it.

(The above was not meant in a serious fashion.)

I'm really not concerned. Yes we know that certain folks are anti-gun, but it really doesn't seem to be a big issue this election, as it very seldom comes up. Also, there's congress, and plenty of sane people (yes, even Democrats) don't want to trample on our rights.

EDIT: Also, this is another reason to get into CAS, as you can become stunningly proficient with weapons that don't have any "evil" features ;).

The president cannot do it that way. EOs are issued to direct how the executive office works, and those parts of govt. that operate under the ex. office.
Obama might use the "bully pulpit" to push a new AWB, and if one passed kongress he'd sign it, but it can't be done by exec. order.

Um......

I do understand the nightmares, but the jump to "your rights weren't preserved" is slightly larger than a jump lengthwise over the Grand Canyon. Unless you're living in a state which itself has banned semiauto rifles, there's nothing on the federal level that says you cannot...ergo, your rights in that regard are intact.

Fear not. The next administration is going to be so busy untangling the yarn snarl of this economy they won't even remember how to spell AWB, or have the time or political capital to spend making it happen.

Ammo, though, as Texas Rifleman correctly said, is another issue altogether. THAT, you might want to be making sure you have. *Or have the stuff to make it*

im more worried about the price increases on guns and ammo more than a ban

a ban is possible dont get me wrong but i see prices rising as something coming before a ban

Questions ..

Hey there;
Couple of questions.
#1 What generation would that be ????
#2 Why would there be nothing we could do about it ????
#3 What is AWB...

Statements > Assault weapons are illegal in most states. (Full auto )
Disclaimer > There ar esome that may have permits for Full atuo weapons.

I am sure the term being used here AWB is not refering to fully automatic weapons. My question is then. Why are we here useing that term.

My biggest fear is that all the threats against Obama could be used as fuel to help push the AWB through a Democratic congress.

Hoplophile, we have done A LOT to preserve your rights. I remember in the 1970's that banning handguns was a real possibility, and those of us involved in the politics of firearms ate, slept, and breathed fighting to preserve firearms rights. We now have concealed carry provisions for handguns in most states. I think you are being unreasonable with a statement like that because if we had not fought this fight with all of our energy and resources at a time when there were a lot fewer of us you would not be able to own much of anything related to firearms.

In terms of a possible AWB, I think it is a real possibility. The Democrats lost a lot of ground by supporting the AWB of 1994 and hopefully learned something from that but I am not optimistic that they are educable. We also have a group of Republicans willing to sacrifice us (despite the fact that we have put many of them into office) for political expediency.

We need to support the pro-2nd Amendment organizations with our memberships, our hard work, and our financial contributions (Have you joined any of these organizations????). We need to be politically involved locally, at the State level, and at the Federal level. In addition to all of this, I would suggest stocking up on items to the best of your ability just in case things do go bad.

I'm thinking the only thing thats gonna come faster than another AWB is this thread getting banned. It stinks of politics.

Texas R.

Hey There :
Pretty good answer. 2 out of 3 aint bad. I have to watch what I say on this issue , My last comments on another post got the thread locked.
What ? Was it some thing I said.??????????
Ever get the feeling that there just are not very many out there like you. ?

What it comes down to is, if obama wins, start buying up all your 'scary' toys ASAP. And don't forget to buy some mags for them too.

I'm thinking about picking up a couple AR receivers and ar-15 mags if I don't just buy a complete rifle in time.

Professor Gun: I deeply appreciate you, but for every one of you, there are ten who would support another ban. I speak not of you, but of those who lack your foresight.

I'd be more worry about an attack on ammo , thanks to the Heller decision and that little phrase 'in common use' pretty much has killed off any direct outright ban of Homeland Defence Weapons .

Well we are in a war of words as much as rights on this one so everyone tends to be pretty picky. This whole "AWB", Assault Weapon Ban, thing came about by making up a new class of firearm where there was none before.

What they really wanted was to have a "Ban guns that look scary" law but they couldn't figure out how to do it so they just invented a new term and gave it a bizarre legal definition "assault weapon".

Well, if you're really worried about it....

1) VOTE.
2) work for your favorite state reps and Congresscritters who are pro-RKBA
3) instead of dumping money on possible targets of an AWB, send that money to candidates who will be working for RKBA. Make sure you note that that's what you're doing when you make the contribution. Whether you send them enough for a MaDeuce or a .22 magazine, make the point that you're investing in the future of RKBA by sending them money.
