I have been thinking about buying a back up AR to my Colt. with the elections looming I'm thinking I better quit putting it off. there are so many brands out there now its hard to figure out what to stay away from. if money wasn't an issue I would buy another Colt. I'm looking at spending less than 1000.00 new on a M-4 type w/collapsible stock, any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just don't want to make a mistake make a bad buy.

I've done exactly what you are thinking - have a 1980s Colt Government Model,
full sized scoped rifle. I added an Eagle Arms M4 as a back up. Put a 4x Colt scope on it and it is as accurate as the other one. I keep them packed in the same range bag. Great with ammo and magazines interchangeability.

See, you say things like this and you cost me money. It isn't fair.

Bad part is those three are my back ups for my DPMS LR308. And it is my back up for my DSA FAL. And its my back up for my PTR91. (Its really not a good way of thinking)

If you shop around you should be able to find a new Colt 6920 for right around $1000. You may also be able to find some of the more basic BCM models for that price as well.

being a back up gun I was just looking on the S&W site and got me thinking about the AR15 M&P Sport which can be had pretty cheap.

If I were in the market for another AR-15, I wouldn't hesitate to grab a Sport if I found one. I've been spending time on the S&W forum and that Sport is quite the rifle.

is the sport milspec? in terms of stock, buffer tube, does it share the same bolt carrier and buffer etc? not that i'm a milspec nazi, but being a backup,in my mind it's parts should be interchangable with your colt.

also 6920s can be had for under 1k last i checked.

most parts would be, save for the buffer tube, stock, and perhaps the buffer being the wrong weight.

Buffer tube is mil spec, stock as well. Not sure about buffer, though.

I've not found anywhere as of lately where the 6920 specifically is under $1k in a FTF situation. Maybe used, however.

Hope a Windham owner chimes in, Im more and more seeing them gain popularity. Wish an owner would do a review.

Take a good look at Palmetto State Armory. Sometimes I feel like I work for them (I swear I don't :)) because I recommend them so much. But they have good prices, ship quick (it is taking a little longer now because they have free shipping this summer) and good customer service (I had emailed once to try to change my order and got a prompt response. On top of that, their prices are good. I have bought a few guns from them and countless boxes of ammo and am just a firm believe that if a company treats you well you should let people know.

You could probably set yourself up with something like this:

with

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers/psa-16-m4-cmv-mp-upper.html

Together, all mil-spec, with a magazine and the full auto BCG and M16 charging handle for under $750.

thanks for the info on the sport's sbuffer tube and stock. not sure if the buffer itself has a spec per say, but i would want it to be the same weight as my primary rifle.

perhaps the 6920 has gone up recently. i found g&r tactical has them in stock for $1050. i imagine shipping and transfer might run another $40.

Pretty well covered here but decided to pick up a couple of kits and a couple of stripped lowers as my spares.

I'm sure they're cheaper online. LGS wants a premium, as do Walmart, Cabelas, BP, and several shops in my metro region. I paid $1100 after tax for mine in 2009, seems stable.

Any of them will do. I own several, some lower end, some higher end, but I would not hesitate to buy a Bushmaster despite what some have to say nor would I hesitate to buy a Daniel Defense again as I love that one. Both run flawlessly and hard. The Bushmaster seems to be built like a tank, the Daniel Defense v5LW is pure awesomeness. It is machined perfectly and everything about it says quality but at the end of the day it is more of my safe queen. Not that I would not take it out and abuse it if I had to but I would prefer not to. The only real different I would have to speculate would be quality control, other than that take your pick. As long as you can handle it and it goes bang reliably then who cares who its made by.

P.S. I would certainly not hold a Colt over my Daniel Defense. I know everyone swears by them but IMO Daniel Defense, Noveske, and some others are nicer rifles. However, this is just my opinion.

If your budget is 1000 dollars, a little looking around can find you another colt...

You already like yours, and if you want to see it down the road it will have the best resale.

Just my opinion

I suggest a BCM. You can order a complete rifle for $1025 from a few different vendors, or if you go with a blemished lower you can keep it just over $900. I have a blemished lower and a regular one and I can't tell the difference.

almostfree, man the BCM must really have gone up, just last fall I bought a complete rifle for just under $800.00 here in Nevada/Arizona. Where did ya pay $1025.00 for it?!
