Barrel Break in advice

What is the bottom line on barrel brake in of a new rifle?

The bottom line is, it is helpful or it's a waste of time, depending upon who you ask. But, I think you should know, you are not breaking in the entire barrel, only the throat. And, it doesn't matter if the rifle is a factory barrel or a handlapped custom barrel; the throat will have tooling marks running perpendicular to the bore on it. I have had a couple of custom rifles built, and I used the Krieger 13 shot routine of breakin. I have shot it in F Class competition for which I shoot about 60 rounds, and when I get home and clean it, there is nary a trace of copper that comes out of the barrel when I clean it.

Here is a quote from Gale McMillan, a custom rifle and gun maker, on his thoughts about barrel break in.

Thank you, jmr40, for bringing up the Gale McMillan quote. Now, please explain to everyone how a 13 shot breakin routine contributes to someone having to buy another barrel sooner, thereby benefiting the barrel maker as Mr. McMillan alludes to?
