Baseball bats anyone?

I've seen a baseball bat used more than once to take out a bad guy. It works like a charm, too. The metal bats are best, plus they give a nice 'ping!!', too

If it is practical for you; Find a good dojo which offers weapon classes with the bokken. Aikido comes to mind…. I imagine a skilled individual wielding a bokken would have a significant advantage over someone wildly wielding a bat.

Seeing as this is on topic, I'll just ask her: are the Cold Steel bats any good? What other bats are good? (I'm assuming some companies are known for high-quality bats.)

I use a tactical baseball bat silencer... and a sub-sonic bat... you can't hardly hear the "ping"!!

The Estwing all metal camp axe is pretty good if you have to rely on a contact weapon. Goes well accompanied by the screaming, drooling Viking Berserker persona.

Brother Rob,

Let us not overthink this. Please. :)

Any name-brand bat (heck, any bat that is verifiably hickory/aluminum) will survive a few knocks to the noggin. My favorite basher is one I pulled out of a trashpile, along with a nice fly rod that was perfectly functional, if old. It had a few chunks missing, like it'd been used to smack bricks or something, but anything I did to it seemed to hurt my hands a lot more by comparison. And boy, did I do a lot to it.

Last i saw that bat, I'd given it to my buddy who'd decided to join the Marines. I don't believe he took it to Iraq with him, but who knows?

That said, Cold Steel's indestructible polycarb bats definitely awaken that thing in my brain stem that goes "EAT CHEAPER FOOD, YOU COULD AFFORD ONE."

definatly a t-ball bat. shorter length makes it easier to handle in tight spots and around corners...maybe mount a flashlight or a red dot on it, or that shoulder thing that goes up and youve got yourself a nice tactical home defense bat

What you can see you can catch. When I was in Hi-school I happened to got involve in a street fight. While walking home a group of two were locked in a scramble, one guy from the other group thought me and my friends were trying to reinfore the other group. To cut short the story, the guy with the bat swung the baseball bat obviously aiming for my head. Instinctively my arms and and hand moved to cover my head, suddenly the guy, sensing of a poor hit re-aimed the bat to my left rib-cage. He swung fast and hard but I was able to anticipate the flight path, somehow:eek:. I was fighting for life at that moment you know. As he swung towards me I let the bat flow thru to near rib cage impact as I raised my left arm to clutch the bat :what:. The bat did hit my rib cage and it did hurt:mad:. But I was able to clutch locked the bat and never let go. The guy got startled and had to let go. When I got the bat I was wildly waiving it in the air like capt. caveman and the guy just took off.

Thru those moments I never felt pain :barf: but few minutes after the hit I was grimacing with pain and had to be sent to the hospital for x-rays

I was lucky though.

As for the bat as a weapon, better to have one than none in serious situations.

I am sometimes not exactly near one of my defensive revolvers in my apartment; I keep a t-ball bat (aluminum; 15 oz; 25" long) around as an alternative; it is light enough to use 1 handed which allows my other arm to be used to block, shove, push, etc; the lighter weight also allows me to get good momentum and velocity thru the swing; not exactly prime but works in a pinch

The Club

I have a Club in the car, which is obviously used to slow down car thieves. I bought the Club with the thought that it would make a useful weapon if needed. I believe it's marketed as a dual use (security & weapon) device, since the name seems to signify that it's available as a weapon. Its presence in the car is legitimate, so it won't be treated as a weapon by law enforcement until you've used it as one. Swing for the fences.

More to the point...

The real issue in terms of bats for self defense is end-loaded or balanced. If you go with an end-loaded bat, you're getting more momentum but less speed. A balanced bat gives higher bat speed but less momentum.....So which is better, a heavy slow bat or a fast light bat? :)

Now I've always been partial to a balanced bat, but I was swinging a friend's Miken Freak Plus tonight that was red-hot, and it's end-loaded. Maybe it all comes down to bat placement and familiarity with your bat. Worst case scenario is to have a high tech bat and not be able to get it out of the holster or have it jam on you because of unfamiliarity with grip and other features. :D

I'm thinking of buying a baseball bat only sort of weapon you could own here play rounders with the kids not sure what those big leather mitts are for though

Pax Jordana; I agree with you, but as I said I was lucky. But I do maintain that for any whacking device, for as long you are able see it coming you may able to do some precautionary response.

Bullets from a firing gun are different though. :)

Yes, but won't the ping give away your position?
Well if the the ping comes from his skull strike he will be hearing it a while may be seeing little lights and stars to.

There is a father here in a local hospital who has now been in a coma for more than 10 days after walking out of his home to check on a disturbance, and being attacked by 3 teens with bats, apparently only struck twice but my never recover. So if you think you are not being threatened by deadly force when someone has a bat (or any solid club), think again.

+1 for Mag Lites.

Last year when I lived in my "weapon free" college dorm, I had a huge Mag Lite that held four D batteries. I would not want to be on the receiving end of a whack with that.
