the good old baseball bat

Get a collapsable baton, they're about $20 and they're light. I have an aluminum teeball bat in my car that is very light and can be used with one hand.

I keep a small aluminum bat in my truck for killing sharks. You just never know when you might have a shark that is trying to hurt you. That was before I started concealed carry. But frankly, in a knife situation, I would just as soon have a bat in my hand. You can administer a tremendous amount of force very quickly with a bat should the need arise.

Be careful though, it would be considered a dangerous weapon if used.

I won't be one of those who automatically think a bat is better than a knife because like any weapon, the effectiveness is determined by the skill of the wielder.

I'd rather defend myself from a knife attack with a bat if no gun were available. However, the circumstances that allow one to get the bat in time to do anything with it are usually road rage cases. No law abiding person I have ever seen routinely carries a bat. Many carry some sort of knife.

Now, everywhere but where I am prohibited by metal detectors, I have a knife. Sometimes a large folder, sometimes a small fixed blade. Were I to have to defend against the typical scum wielding a bat, I will grimly take my chances. I hate to run. I joined the Navy in part because there is no emphasis on running because there is nowhere to run to at sea.

Most people who will swing a bat will tend to overswing it. Most aren't going to be composed enough for convincing feints, jabs, or controlled swings. They mostly want the "home run." You just don't give it to them. I think if the experience or calmness is lacking in the batsman, an offensive bat wielder can be patiently closed with and stabbed into submission.

One of the drawbacks of the bat is the energy required to effectively employ it. Tire out the bat wielder and you will get sloppier and sloppier attacks to exploit in the counter-assault.

Its all in the tactics in my book.

I keep a nice aluminum one behind my truck seat. Found it along the Highway while going shopping. Its a great self defense tool. Not many argue with a baseball bat.

I've used a Louisville Slugger to great effect on a few occasions. It stands up well to cop scrutinization as well as civil court.
From my observations, it hurts like hell and makes a BG want to cease his anti-social activities, quick, fast and in a hurry.;)

Pawnshops in Austin sell machetes with the pricetag reading "GARDEN TOOL $5.00"

I'd imagine that such would be have just as much reach as a baseball bat, just as legitimate to keep in a car, more psychologically intimidating, and would cause more damage in an emergency.

If it's not an life-or-death matter, you shouldn't be hitting anyone with anything.

Real life is seldom so black and white, Matthew. Different tools for different jobs.

If you ever sneak up on someone that's vandalizing your property at night and you really want to crack 'em good with the Louisville, but don't wanna' kill 'em or break bones, get 'em good & hard on the calf's on the back of their legs - they'll be flippin' around like a squirrel that just got run over by a car...

Yeah, the name always cracks me up. I also carry a 15" adjustable wrench in my saddlebags.
"Just part of my tool kit Officer..." Heh heh.
