The TA01NSN comes with a flattop mount, can I take that mount off, buy the thumbscrew and put it directly onto the carry handle of an M4.

I don't know if the flattop mount is on the ACOG permanently or if you can take it off and the thumbscrew will fit.

These things are hard to come by and a place near me has a TA01NSN but I don't know if I will be able to mount it on my carry handle without putting a rail on top of the carry handle.

Trijicon doesn't make a carry handle mount for the AR. I believe the LaRue mount is 1913 also.

That is b/c the ACOG was designed to be mounted to the carry handle directly. I want to know if I can take the flattop mount off an TA01NSN and just use a thumbscrew to attach directly to the carry handle as the TA01 does.

You should be able to. I think you can mount all the TA01/TA31/TA11 series directly to the carry handle without any extra parts except the 1 or 2 screws.

Have you tried calling them, if it was designed to mount directly onto the carry handle then they should be able to help you over the phone.

Just unscrew the flattop mount from the base of the ACOG. Once you have the flattop mount off, the ACOG base will slip right into the channel of the AR carry handle.
At least that's the way my TA-11 is.

You'll need a #10 3/8" machine screw to mount it and a special washer from Trijicon. Trijicon sells the washer and screw together for $15. You can't mount without the washer because the ACOG will shift and the screw will work loose.

Also, mounting in the carry handle will affect how the BDC reticle works, particularly if you mount on a 20".

Your best option is to purchase a fkattop upper receiver for about $80 - $160, depending on mfg. I recommend sticking with the same mfgr as your rifle or buying a LaRue.

I was wondering similar things.

If you buy the TA01 meant to go directly in the carry handle, can you mount and remove it without losing zero, or does it need to go on and stay on? I see ads for some nice carry case or fanny pack bag, but they imply that you don't have to keep it permanently mounted.

So, silly newbie question, but how easy is it to put on and remove the TA01? Just slide into the carry handle, turn the screw, and head to the range?

Why spend a grand on an ACOG just to mount it badly? Spend a few more bucks to buy a flat top upper, you'll be much happier with a lower mounted scope and not have to worry about the reticule being off.

I bought a TAO1NSN two years ago. I thought I would really liked the close quarters iron/tritium sight on top. The truth is that sitting on top of the scope is too high for a quick or good sight picture and I ended up removing the rear sight but kept the front sight post. I'm still considering getting a Jpoint sight to replace the top iron sights.

You will get a shift in zero every time you remove and replace the ACOG in the carry handle mount. If you make a witness mark on the mounting screw so that you remount with the same tension every time, you can keep the shift fairly minimal though (about 1MOA give or take).

The carry handle mounted ACOGs can be very nice (especially some of the compact ACOGs) if you can get used to the chin-weld to use the ACOG. It gives you the option of immediate use of the irons or a magnified sight picture just by raising your head.

I'm still thinking about it, but I was practicing cheek weld, and it doesn't seem to be that big a deal to look up where I figure the scope will be.

It certainly seems better than a 10/22 with a see-through scope mount base. That feels like you really have to lift your head totally up to see through the scope.

I'm interested, very interested. 4x is enough?
