BCM vs PSA Complete Lowers

People should be sure to specify Premium, Freedom, or PTAC when sharing their experiences. I say this because I think BCM vs PTAC is apples to oranges. BCM vs premium line PSA is probably closer to a wash.

An in-spec forged aluminum lower is an in-spec forged aluminum lower. You're not going to see much difference so long as all the holes are drilled in the right locations. On the other hand, when buying a complete lower there are certainly differences when it comes to the quality of the small parts.

BCM rejects lots of parts and components as a regular part of business. Their goal is to deliver the highest quality product at the most reasonable price point that they possible can, but the former takes priority over the latter. On the other hand, PSA either chooses to sells their rejects, or they simply don't have the QA/QC in place to catch them before going out. That part simply cannot go unnoticed.

When it comes to uppers, PSA has historically had serious problems in the assembly aspect or production. I happened to receive one,but when I shared it here on THR, it went over like a fart in church. The more complex an upper is, the less I trust PSA's ability to build it properly. For a basic upper with an FSP and standard hand guards, it's kinda hard to mess that up. Introduce low profile gas blocks and handguards that require attention to detail upon installation, and you're on shaky ground with PSA.

Over the years of buying and/or encountering products from both companies, I've come to trust BCM much more than PSA. That's not to say that I wouldn't trust a "premium" PSA product, but I'm certainly going to go over it with the proverbial fine toothed comb before doing so.

A fit and finish difference is believable, as PSA does have some scratch and dent items out there. But smoothness? That's scraping the bottom of the barrel because one, it is a result of the way the parts are finished (anodizing and parkerizing), and two, using the gun will smooth out the action.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel? Explain.

I am only sharing my experience. Sure, using any gun will smooth out the action. But my newest BCM upper hand cycles more smoothly than any of my PSA uppers (all PSA Classic or Premium parts). The difference, as stated before is small, but noticeable. The BCM upper is just a more refined offering.

Both of my AR's are at least 75% PSA parts. They work great and are at a nice price point. I would recommend them to anyone.

All of my PSA uppers have run problem free.
At this point I have no interest in spending the extra money on a BCM upper, as there is no quality benefit over PSA's premium line IMO. I have a buddy who spent more than double what I did on his BCM upper, I've gotten to examine it and shoot it... I'll save my $400 on a PSA any day, and add other goodies.
I do prefer a BCM bolt over PSA's line, but that's because I don't like sifting through PSA's offerings and vague descriptions to find the equivalent.

If I order a something from BCM, I 100% expect it to be correct.

If I order a something from PSA, I put 50/50 odds on something being wrong with it.

That being said, I've ordered much more stuff from PSA then BCM. :uhoh: Go figure?
