What ammo would you reccomend if you were hunting for this fella*?

*The bear.

Crud, shotgun forum. Sorry.

But not actually too far off. I wouldn't "hunt" a bear with a shotgun. I do carry Brenneke rifled slugs in my 12 ga when I'm camping for bear protection though.

I should have put in my post that I meant for protection. I love bears too much to hunt them. However if I was out hiking or camping & one ran around a corner at me, my love for them would cool off VERY quickly.:D

Cool slugs! But until they allow high explosive 12 ga. shells to be sold to the peons, the best bet is absolutely, positively, BRENNEKE HARDCAST MAGNUMS. Foster type slugs are for deer, they are made of very soft lead that will deform and deflect. The brenneke magnums will produce over 3,000 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle and for close range are on par with a hot .45-70 round.

Lee Lapin just sent me a Govt report on this. Suffice to say that a 12 gauge Brenekke slug compares favorably with medium power rifle rounds like 30-06 and not too far behind the 375 H&H.

Buck didn't fare so well.

Whoa, are those even legal? :scrutiny: And yes, I believe the operator would be in as much danger as the bear, them slugs are insane.

ILLEGAL

Obviously, a round like this will be "Military and Law Enforcement ONLY".

Just like you aren't allowed to have M-1 Abrams tank with Armor Penetrating Sabot rounds.

Bummer...but like that one guy said....I think a lot of people would get hurt shooting it.

I'd say thats a good use for the 600 nitro double guns that the old time African big game hunters used to use.

I read in some subversive publication, might have been the original "Anarchist's Cookbook", about drilling out a hole in a Foster type rifled slug and packing a chemical in there, forget the compound now, but it's the white stuff on a match head. Supposidly it packs pretty good whallop at the business end. In that piece, they said African elephants had been successfully "fragged" with 'em. I wouldn't have the cojones to shoot such a thing, though. But, they made it sound like a pyrotechnic delight. :D

Standard Brenneke 1.25 ounce lead slug load for a smoothbore.

Winchester Platinum Tip or Brenneke sabot slugs for a rifled barrel.

12 or 20, all three will kill a black bear.

If you were lucky enough to obtain a grizzly permit why would you waste it using a shotgun?
Get a .375 Magnum, Holland and Holland or Weatherby, either or.
That opportunity only comes around once or twice in a lifetime.

slugs

Agree with Lee Lapin , and Dave's assessment.

Now I gots a something I am working on...
You see you fire this shotshell and the projectile is a parachute of a really ugly Elected Official. This covers Bears eyes. YOU run...

Bear removes parachute and views picture...runs screaming into the woods.

Can bears read? ...wondering if the second round could be a little bitty recipe book. I was thinking of the addresses of PETA folks, some Elected Officials...you know, survival of the fittest type thing.

Use Enough Ugly

700 Nitro Express with 1,000 grain solids!

No shotgun in Hell will take that bear down before it takes your head off with that paw!

What shotgun ammo would you reccomend if a shotgun was all you had? Granted that is a huge paw.

In the absence of $100,000 to spend on a Holland and Holland double rifle what you suggest?

Bears, particularly the black variety, are not invincible and I have every confidence in my 870 and Brennekes. They get the job done.

I live on the fringes of bear country and if you are troubled by the prospect of bears I would stongly suggest the books written by James Gary Shelton. There is lots of good info on bear behavior, avoidance, use of OC spray and guns.

BTW, for those that are interested, shotgun launched grenades that contain below a certain thresh-hold of explosive (either low or high) composition are perfectly legal to buy, use, etc. as it would be to use any other ammo. They're just a bit expensive if you don't make them yourself (with proper training, knowledge, following the law, etc.) and a wee bit dangerous if used incorrectly.

I have not read the books mentioned, but I do know the difference between Black Bear Scat and Grizzley Scat though....

Black Bear scat has the remains of twigs, leaves, berry's small mammals in it.

Grizzley Bear scat had hiking boots, sunglasses, remains of large mammals and smells like OC spray!
