I don't have a lot of expirence with the 92, but it seems people either love them or hate them. The XD is a excellent choice in my opinion and the new XDm should be even better. I think your it kind of depends on that you will be using it for they both have pro's and con's. Remember what they say about opinions. When it comes down to it yours is the only one that really matters. A few questions to ask yourself. What will work best for you? How does it fit your hand? Price? Availability of accessories and parts, aftermarket and factory? And can it double for more than one use for you? Costomer service of the manufacturer? How well you shoot each? I am sure I am missing some.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

I can't stand the Beretta. I deal regularly with the M9, and I find it loathsome compared to my XD-9 Subcompact. It doesn't feel good to me, it weighs too much, and in my experience it has reliability problems, although admittedly the ones I end up firing are pretty well used and abused. Still, I suspect that you could take an XD and beat the hell out of it and still not have any problems. The same cannot be said about the Beretta, in my experience.

I've found a great deal of difference in between military M9's and Beretta's from other sources.

Of course I'm biased but I carried a 92 as a duty weapon. I have two Beretta Elite's (gets rid of the safety in favor of a decocker). They perform wonderfully.

With that said, I'm going to probably add a XD to my collection. I tend to favor steel guns to polymer frame, but the XD is a nice firing gun.

I say get the Beretta in 9mm or .40 and a XD in .45 ACP. You can't have too many guns.

Out of the many autoloaders I own, if I had to give up all but 2 of them, the 2 I would keep would probably be my Beretta 92FS and my SA XD-40sc. I love them both. I know you are comparing an XD-9 and not a 40, but they are close enough for this discussion.

The Beretta 92 design is simply a classic, much like the M1911, Walther PPK, or an old S&W .38 revolver. Mine is accurate, dependable, very easy to shoot, and the moving parts all feel as smooth as a warm stick of butter.

My XD-40 is all those things as well, but just lacks any kind of "soul". It's not a classic design, doesn't have the looks the Beretta does, and doesn't quite melt in my hand the way the Beretta does.

The choice between the two would be tough, but I'd go with the Beretta.

The Beretta is nice, but I prefer the XD simply due to how much I dislike slide mounted safeties. Used a 96 in a class, and the safety would get flipped on all the time.

XD9. More concealable, more reliable operation (IMO), same capacity, THE best warranty in the firearms world, better trigger... What are we talking about again?

Shotgun, I own and have shot both heavily. I think they're both good, reliable firearms. Your choice is really going to come down to fit, features and how you're going to use the firearm.

I like the Beretta, I love to shoot it, but I think it only works for range use. It's too big to carry, I don't like that you can't carry it cocked and locked, I think the double action trigger and thumb safety is redundant, and I don't like the feel of the slide against my hand when I rack it (sights are too rough).

I like the XD for range, home defense and carry. It fits well for carry (compact and subcompact), I like the striker fire action and light trigger pull, I like the features (striker and loaded chamber indicator), I like the dual passive safeties, and I like the fit and feel.
