i am interested in a Beretta 92 series handgun. i am trying to find out some honest comparison between this gun and the Taurus clone.

I am in no need of opinions based on brand, but rather shot experience and honest differences.

When Beretta won the Brazilian military contract they were required to manufacture the guns in Brazil so they build a factory. This is a common practice and the same occurred when Beretta won the US military contract. They build a factory in the US. In any event, when the Brazilian contract was completed Beretta sold the factory and rights to build the model 92, as it then existed, to Taurus. Now Taurus builds a somewhat earlier design but, essentially the same gun, to their own standards. Let the reader understand.

I've handled/shot the Taurus PT-92 and the Beretta Model 92FS & Beretta M-9.

IMO...
Everything (accuracy, reliability, quality) is the same.

However...
I acutally like the Taurus PT-92 over the Beretta Model 92FS & Beretta M-9.
This is due to the frame mounted (safety/decocker) control lever on the Taurus, as opposed to the slide mounted (safety/decocker) control lever on the Beretta.

IMO...
The Taurus copies of the Beretta pistols are the only Taurus semi-auto pistols that are any good. All the other semi-auto pistol designs they make are somewhat subpar when it comes to reliability and quality.

While the Taurus are not as nicely finished as the Berettas, I think they are functionally the same... with one big difference. I prefer the frame mounted safety /decocker to the slide mounted safety.

You can carry the Taurus in Cond 1, you can not do that with the Beretta.

Plus I am a cheap basterd and saving $150 bucks is at least two additional mags and 500 rds of ammo.

+1

That's what is good about Taurus vs an original Beretta - for the most part

A choice,

Since the price difference is so small these days, I'd just get the Beretta and be done with it. A little nicer fit & finish/craftsmanship is worth the extra money to me.

Things you do not check when buying a gun. What is the twist rate on the barrel. I bought a Taurus and it came with a 10 twist barrel. It would not shoot lead bullets. I bought a 16 twist barrel for a barreta for it and it was fine.

I would also prefer a frame mounted safety on my 92FS, but I don't know if I would swap her for a Taurus for that. I read quite a few stories about Taurus' quality which I actually don't know if they're true. Taurus are uncommon to find where I live and I haven't ever shot/held one.

What I wonder is if modern Taurus have the part on the left side of the frame that acts as a safety slider stopper, that the 92FS introduced some time ago.
