Best .22LR ammo for my Single Six? for gifts?

I'm probably going to give away all my boxes of Remington Golden Bullet .22LR during the holidays. They make any gift-exchange package a little better.

I'm going to want to replace them with at least a few boxes of something else. I never shoot rimfire, and I wouldn't even have a rimfire gun except for this early 3-screw Ruger Single Six. I guess I keep it in the safe for when kids come over, but I don't have little kids anymore. My own are the youngest in my family for their generation and they've all been big enough to shoot a Vaquero or S&W L-frame for a long time now. Maybe I should trade it for that Winchester Model 12 I've always wanted.

Being a revolver, it's not particular about which .22LR ammo I feed it. But there still must be some better than others. Looking around locally at what's available, I see the real cheap stuff like Aguila and Armscor. I haven't tried those, but I don't want the dirtiest, cheapest stuff if it's junk. I see some CCI Green Tag but I can shoot my 357 handloads for about the same. They might be worth it for a rifle, but I don't think they'll add anything to the 5.5" wheelgun. I can get:

CCI standard velocity 40 gr. LRN
Winchester Super X 40 gr. LRN
Federal Champion 40 gr. LRN
Browning BPR 36 gr. HP ( 5 cents each )

Besides what's available locally, I could probably order from Powder Valley, Brownells or Midway since I'll be paying for some shipping from one of those places eventually -- I'd just wait until I had a bigger order from there and add the 22LR on to that.

So what should I get? Chances are, I'll be giving it away again next year or the year after. What would you want to receive? Bear in mind I'm probably looking to buy at 5 to 15 cents per round. The cheaper it is, the more my guests can shoot and the more I can give away. The cleaner and more accurate it is, the better experience they'll have, and if I give it to someone with an automatic it would be better for them if it functioned.

Of the ones you listed, I think CCI Standard Velocity has the best reputation.

My favorite thing about the Single-Six is that they'll gobble up pretty much anything though. On top of that, even dirty ammo is OK because they're so easy to clean too -- just pop out the cylinder, wipe/brush out the frame just above the forcing cone, and run a brush/patch through the chambers and bore. Nothing to it!

why not just shoot up the remington golden bullets, then replace gradually with cci minimag or aguila super extra? the pre-wuhan flu gb ammo from walmart was decent. a ruger single six is a wonderful “eats anything,” “one and done,” 22 handgun. try some 22wmr ammo in it too. don’t wait for kids to come along to shoot it, please enjoy it now.

Are you feeling ok? Maybe a doctors visit is warranted. :D

My bulk .22 ammo has been Fed Auto Match and CCI Blazer. The CCI Standard is an excellent next step up. After that your near about looking at "match" ammo.

Some of the single six are terrible with 22 lr. I have an older one that will shoot an inch at 25 yards with mags and 7 with any 22lr. It's probably the best of all my 22 mags and pretty with 22lr. Some are ok.

I've found that the 36 gr aguila super extra is very good in any gun I've shot from my 617 and gp100 to my Glock 22. Cci standard is good but you can probably find the aguila cheaper

I've shot all of these rimfire choices and while I much prefer CCI they all functioned and grouped roughly the same from revolvers. In fact, some older production Golden Bullets have been winners in terms of function in a couple of my .22 handgun conversions (Glock and 1911) -- the rumor I encountered was Remington-branded rimfire ammo was made in different factories at different times, so apparently vintage matters.

If your guest are shooters, then a big box of Remington GBs should make a fine stocking-stuffer. I'd be happy with one as a gift, particularly if my rimfire ammo stockpile was getting low. I don't think I know any shooters that would turn up their noses at any brand of rimfire ammo that's free, but if you think you have some real ammo connoisseurs around your campfire try buying them small boxes of something special like Eley Tenex Match.

My suggestion would be to try a box of CCI CB .22 SHORT Sub-sonic. I get good accuracy out of my .22 revolver with them, they do not require the use of hearing protection and have enough velocity to make a satisfying sound when shooting steel. Obviously they will not cycle an auto loader (unless it has been extremely modified Mossad fashion) but out of a .22 wheel gun they are a lot of fun to plink with.

The only thing a single six won't fire is a dud round no matter the brand name. It is not a target pistol so expensive ammo is mostly a waste of money. I prefer CCI-SV, one of the more accurate lower cost choices and very seldom contains a dud round. My luck with this century's Winchester 22 ammo is so bad that I won't even consider purchasing it.

It has been my experience, with several .22’s, that the Browning offerings are lousy. Oversized bullets are hard to load that choked in many of my autoloaders (Ironically my Browning Auto 22 rifle hated them) and cases stuck in my revolvers. I still have a few boxes left, but once they're gone, never again.

CCI Mini Mags have a good reputation. But a batch I have recently shot isn’t all that great, as these seem to be underpowered and not cycling autos. (I think those are a fluke. ) The CCI Standard Velocity loads have been very consistent, as have the more-budget friendly Blazers.

The Federal Champion have been good, too. Federal Auto Match bulk? Es no bueno. Mucho duds.

Again, just my .02, nothing more and nothing less.

Stay safe.

You have to try them. 22 rim fires are no different than any other rifle.

I like Winchester 40gr Power-Points in my .22 revolvers. My wife likes Remington hyper velocity Yellow Jackets in hers. But I'm not sure Yellow Jackets are available anymore. It seems like I heard Remington quit making them. :(

I have a stainless Ruger 22/45 5.5" bull barrel that's most accurate with Remington ammo, doesn't matter if it's Thunderbolt, Golden Bullet, Target, etc. Nothing else I've tried shoots as accurately in this pistol.

I also have a Ruger 22/45 Lite that's most accurate with Winchester ammo.

I suggest trying several brands, loads, and weights, to learn what shoots best out of your particular pistol. Buy a box at a time and experiment.

I have a Ruger Mark ll Target with a bull barrel and it shoots about anything equally well. Shooting squirrels with a rifle takes a good gun and ammo it likes.

I read somewhere that Winchester is the maker of Browning ammo. That may or may not be correct but it has prevented me from ever buying any of it.
I think you are right.

I havent had the same number of issues with Winchester-branded stuff, but there have been more than there should be with it.

Stay safe.
