I used to test 22 ammo like they did in the gun mags way before there was internet. The absolute best hollow points I ever tested were the Remington Yellow Jackets. I have a few hundred saved up. I have no idea if they can still be bought or not.

If its just for hunting have a look at the Paco Kelly "Accurizer" that reshapes the point on 22 bullets. I would only use this for hunting rounds because of the time involved.

I had forgot about the Winchester Power Points. I have at least brick of those on hand. IIRC they were developed for hunting in Australia and shooting 10 pound Hares.

You got it!

.22 ammunition quality has gone to hell in the past few years. And no matter what the theoretical advantages are of a particular brand and load, if it doesn't go bang, it's worthless.
I've had the exact opposite experience with Rimfire ammunition these days. When I was a kid it seems like you couldn't get through a box of 50 without having at least one dud. I bought a Ruger SR22 pistol a couple years ago and now have a few thousand rounds through. I've had one dud and not a single cycling malfunction in that time.

I run mostly CCI Mini mag round nose out of it but occasionally run Winchester hp ammo. The gun has been so reliable that I wouldn't have a problem using it for EDC. Yeah, 22 long rifle doesn't pack much punch, but13 Rounds with that level of accuracy is no joke.

As for the Op's question, most of the name brand hollow-point ammo expands out of a rifle. I would go with the most powerful stuff if I were using hollow-point ammo, but I have always personally preferred solids and 22 for penetration as far as hunting goes. An entry and exit wound will bleed out small and medum sized animals like jack rabbits or koons faster than just a larger entry wound from my expierence.

I like CCI 40gr Subsonic LHP. It has a nice big hollowpoint and seems to hit harder than other .22 LHPs I've used.

Also I think it was Shooting Illustrated that the N.R.A. sends out where I saw what were unusually high velocities for the bullets weight and excellent accuracy from their tests with Aguila.

I'm guessing it was Aguila Interceptors, although those are RN so maybe not. 1470 fps with a 40 grain bullet, pretty impressive. I have a few boxes, problem is I don't trust them in my semi autos for obvious reasons, and my Savage Mark II is dialed in for CCI SV and I don't want to mess with it, so really don't have anything to shoot them in.

I haven't tried the high velocity browning stuff but I bought a. 400 round box of their bulk 22 lr ammo last year. At least 5-10% failed to fire. Nah I'm good thanks.
I've had too many problems with "Browning" hyper velocity 40 gr 1435 fps. I have tried them in 5 rifles & only 1 will chamber, fire & eject. I suspect their bullets are out of spec. being too large as to not chamber fully. They are made by Winchester for Browning. I have tried calling Browning to complain, but you can't even get to talk to a real person. I may call Winchester, but they must be aware of this problem.

In 2011 TNOutddors 9 tested 36gr. Mini-Mag holloqwpoints shot from a 10/22 with a 20 inch barrel. They penetrated 10.25" into Sim Test gel and expanded to .408" Sounds pretty good to me.

ArtofGolf:

Thanks for the info. The last time I looked around for mini mags was probably a year or so ago, and they were scarce. It looks like that has improved a lot in the meantime. I'll stock up while I can.

CCI Velocitor. It expands and it holds itself together, unlike the Stinger or Aguila Supermaximum.
