Hi guys, its been quite a while since i last posted on here, but anyway, after some recent excursions into the fields, and several long(er) range misses on groundhogs, I have determined that granadads (very) old stevens .22LR is no longer fulfilling my accuracy requirements. Don't get me wrong, its definitely one of my favorite guns and I will never part with it, but I'd like to invest in something that can consistently place tighter groups at longer distances. I've done some research and determined that a 223 is probably the best choice seeing as this would be used on groundhogs and paper to an absolute max of about 500 yards, but the vast majority of shooting would be within 300. Ive read up on the flat shooting ballistics and relatively cheap availability of 223 which i like, so i'm not looking for other caliber recommendations. The rifles i've considered so far are the:

Howa compact Ranchland Defender rifles: http://www.legacysports.com/products/howa/howa_ranchland.html

Howa compact Heavy Barrel Varminter: http://www.legacysports.com/products/howa/howa_compactvmt.html

I've heard good things about Howa's accuracy and fit and finish, and I like the incusion of the Hogue stocks

(savage) Stevens Model 200: http://www.savagearms.com/st_200long.htm

I have heard that the stevens is basically an older model savage w/o the accutrigger. I have also heard that the stock leaves something to be desired in terms of feel and finish.

I have also contemplated savage, remington, and other brand bolt 223s that can be found reasonably priced if you look around, but still pricy by my part time grocery store job standards.

I thought about a Rossi Heavy Barrel Varmint Single Shot 223, but heard there can be some elevational play in groups due to the break-open design, and the hammer falling seems to me like it could tweak my POA at the last instant.

I dont mind carrying a Heavy Barreled gun around as it would be for relatively short distances, but I dont want a 24 or 26 pound weight lifting bar on the end of my gun, 20 or 22 inches would be a practical length in my opinion.

To end my rambling, What I'm looking for is a sub-500 dollar (cheaper the better, optics and bipod should be considered too...) MOA or better 223 that will get the job done without any frills or un necessary stuff to bump up the price.

Any recommendations, personal experience, and accounts of accuracy would be greatly appreciated. I know thats alot to ask, but thanks in advance! :D

this would be used on groundhogs and paper to an absolute max of about 500 yards,

then you pretty much ruled out EVERYTHING other than the stevens/savage with this statement.... WHY? you ask. It's because at those ranges you will want to shoot the heavier .223 loads that only the savages 1/9" twist will stabilize

also not sure if you have a BASSPRO near you ( if my PA geography holds up , Harrisburgh is about 90 miles from you ) their hunting flyer shows Remington 700 SPS for $439 and 700 SPS Varmint for $479 ( and they do have it in 223 or 204 ruger ).

I believe the Tikka 223 are 1:8 twist

CZ527 Varmint

Savage/Stevens would probably be your best choice for an Sub-$500 rifle. A lot of aftermarket stuff available too.
I went with a CZ527 Varmint in .223, 'cause I didn't want to need to replace/modify anything, she's good out of the box.
Including the rifle/scope/rings combination, she was just about twice your$500.
Tough call tho - with some of the bargain rifles you'll need to modify them to get them to shoot.
Here's a pic of my CZ527.

Good luck,

Bruce

This is my .223 P-dog bolt gun a Savage mod 11BGTH. The rifle is a fantastic shooter but a little over your price cap, $779 out the door at Cabela's. The Glass on it cost about as much as the rifle. Probably could have picked up the rifle about $100 cheaper on GunBroker.

Savage

I've found, as many others have, that Savage deserves their reputation for arguably the best accuracy for the dollar in an "out-of-the-box" rifle. My Remington 700VSS (varmint stainless steel) in 22-250 does great, but has a 1:14" twist. I don't think Remington has anything close in a fast twist .223 that would make you as happy as the Savage 110 family. I have a Tactical 110 (heavy barrel fast twist) .223 that, when I bought it a few years back, was $250 cheaper than the Remington. Now you can get the Savage with the Accu-trigger, and you may have to haggle a bit on prices, but if price is really the key deal maker, I wouldn't hesistate to start looking at Savage. My Savage rifles aren't finished as nicely as my Remingtons, but "pretty" doesn't equal "accurate" anyway.

I have a Stevens 200 in .223. I paid $289 for it. On the top is a Weaver classic K series 6X scope, $119. Mounts and rings.....$29. Total.... $437...err...plus tax $463.22. Shoots 1/2 to 5/8 groups at 100 yards all day with hand loads. I shoot 50gr SP, 52gr HPBT, 53gr HPFB, 60gr V-max. All four bullets perform the same accuracy wise.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I think I've narrowed it down to the savage/stevens rifles. They seem to be the most accurate guns out there for the money, so I guess my main question is with a stevens 200 going for 285 and a savage 11FV available for 447, is the accu-trigger (and any major fit&finish and accuracy differences) worth the extra 162 bucks? Thanks...

Love my Stevens 200. Then I spent 20 minutes in the garage, changed it to a stainless 223 Ackley. Still love it. I don't know about the foreign rifles, but Savage is the only manufacturer I know of that actually looks at what shooters are shooting, and gives them waht they want.

You need to go Savage, Stephens, or Howa to get all that under $500. Howa has a package deal with a Nikko-Stirling scope that retails for about $450 for the whole package. Smokin deal if you get a Howa that shoots as most of them do.

I got my savage 12fv out the door for 458.00 with tax. I then bout a peice of crap bsa 6-24x44 scope and shot dime size groups at a 100 quarter groups at 200. It shoots good but with every thing I put on it she weighs 10lbs.
Savage it the way to go case closed

I have a Weatherby Vanguard varmint special (or whatever its called). I got "unfired" used for $600 with a 3X9 bushnell elite 3200 3x9 scope.

Heavy barrel and a nice composite stock. I put on a ok 4.5-14X scope and harris bipod. Both of these added to the price a bit but I am assuming you mean $500 for the rifle. Its plenty accurate but I dont think I can do 500 yrds with it. Its a 1-12 twist and probably only good with bullets in the 45-55 gr range. Not what I think is needed for 500yds.

But it does damn well @ 200-250 ish on clay pidgeons and tennis balls. Keep in mind I am NO MARKSMAN!!!!

Try used and you could proably get something quite nice and save a few $$$ for some decent glass.

IMO, the beauty of the Stevens/Savage is the ability to change calibers by purchasing a new barrel and bolt head if needed and not having to buy another rifle. A barrel nut wrench and headspace gauge is all you need for a quick caliber change.

I think I will go with the Stevens based on accuracy reports and the price savings that will allow for some better glass. I've also read that the trigger is adjustable down to about 3 1/2 lbs which should be good enough until i can drop a rifle basix or timney job into it. Thanks for all the info and advice guys

How close are you to the central part of PA?
I just saw a Stevens 200 used today for $199 at a local store.
Hard to beat that for a decent, inexpensive rifle.

Savage FV - $460 w/4-12 Simmons scope from Dicks about a year ago. It will shoot .25-.5 in good hands. In mine, maybe .75" consistently. Ugly, but a shooter.

Im in the lehigh valley area which is in the far east half. That is a great price, but with gas the way it is, when all is said and done I'll probably break even with just getting one locally. Thanks for the tip tho!. I'll have to stop and check the selecton at the local Dicks they seem to have a decent selection.

A Savage FV with Accutrigger should be about $450. If you get a Stevens, (hunter barrel) you probably would want to put in an after market trigger such as Sharp Shooter Supply's trigger or Rifle Basix for $90-150 to bring it up to or surpass the accutriggers advantage. (I bought a pre accutrigger Savage and put on a SSS trigger.)

With the Savage barrel nut, some of these Savage guys can switch out a barrel "in the back seat of a Buick".

I took off the Simmons package 3-10x40mm scope and put on a KonusPro scope and am REALLY pleased with this so far.

Here is a Konus I would think about for the money.

Good luck!
