Best $300 rifle scope?

Yeah, I'd guess that Nikon is a more trusted name in optics than some others.

And it boiled down to a lifetime warranty, which Nikon has.

and for $260, I couldn't pass it up.

My opinion the best scope in that prices range is the Weaver Grand Slam. I have a 2.5-10 on a precision rifle and a 4.75 on a .308 Carbine. They are much better than the low end Leupolds, Burris, Bushnells I have in the same price range.

Natchez Shooters Supply usually has the best prices on them.

i agree with sabbathwolf. i rifle is only as good as the optics you have on it. however i have nikon scopes and thier great scopes but if your planning an upgrade later i would consider nikons monarch series..

a lot of guys say a rifle is as good as its optics?? what about all the wars fought with no optics millions of men killed. I doubt if they could talk they would not say the rifle that killed them was no good

Got the Nikon in the mail, and the optic is sharp. Will mount this weekend and take to the range and see how she performs.

Keep up your recommendations, I still have 1 more scope to buy; either another Nikon or something else.

Naming scope is indeed helpful, but it's more helpful if you can say why.... personal experiences with the optic, the clarity, the ruggedness, warranty help, etc.

I'd skip anything less than a VX2 in the Leupold line. Very unimpressed with the bottom tiers they put out for multiple reasons. Can't stand the turrets and the glass is fairly consistently mediocre. I know they are cheap scopes, but for the price, there are better options than the bottom end Leupolds.

Thank you! As someone else mentioned, and was followed up on, $200 for the Burris FF II - I couldn't pass it up. Great sale. It's $300+ everywhere else; so $218 with tax for a 4.5x14-42mm and a full lifetime warranty.

So I didn't anticipate buying a second scope right away, but picked this gem up. Will be interesting to compare the identical Nikon and Burris side by side on similar rifles.

Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 and this Burris. Will be interesting to see these in action.

Thanks for the tip 2ndTimer! I went to my local Sportsman's (Mesa, AZ) and they still had a couple of those Burris scopes for $199. So I grabbed one to mount on the .243. I had just ordered a Vortex Diamondback last week and really didn't need another scope, but at that price I can replace an El Cheapo BSA with the Burris and put the Vortex on my .280.

Leadcounsel;

I'd be taking a look at the Midway special on the Weaver mil-dot tactical @ $299.00.

I had a Millett TRS-1 that did duty on my Savage 308 FCPK. It was a pretty decent scope, tough, good glass and good eye relief. I let it go with the rifle. I recently scored a Steven 200 in 308 dirt cheap and put a Redfield 3-9 on it. The scope is really nice and clear but the eye relief is a bit more finicky. It seems like a pretty darned good scope though. If I was getting it for a rifle I intended to shoot out to 600y I would probably get something stronger than the 3-9. The 3-9 is perfectly capable of shooting that far but the extra magnification is nice sometimes.

I have US Optics, IOR, Leupold Mark IV, and lots of other expensive scopes.

But I have shot the most game at 500 yards with a Leupold VX1 2x7 with a $25 Stoney Point elevation turret.

That is a $210 scope + $25 = $235

Leupold sent me mine for free when some old scope shook loose the reticle with my home made cantilever [diving board] scope mount.

I used the VX1 2x7 because it is ultra light, 9.9 ounces.

I built a pre 64 M70 270 that is 8.9 pounds with scope, sling, bipod, and ammo.

Oh, and you will want a range finder.

Keep the receipt. They won't honor their warranty without it.
What company are you referring to?

My thoughts for $300 are either Leupold or Sightron. Leupold if you think you might ever sell it, because they hold their value better than most. Sightron if you know you will own it until you die because I think they offer the best value/cost ratio of any scope maker I've had experience with. Admittedly this isn't all of them, but these are always opinion questions, aren't they?

My experience with Nikon, unfortunately, isn't any better than the $40 Bushnell or Simmons products.

SWFA (does anybody know what that stands for?) has the Sightron Big Sky SII 3X9X42 on closeout for $269! That is a remarkable bargain in my book! http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-9x42-SII-Big-Sky-Riflescope-P9155.aspx
