What AK 47 is the best? Is there a country of origin, which produced better AK’s? Is there better serial #’s or dates to own?

I guess the original Russian made AKs are the best being that they invented it but if you were to consider the overall package including price, I might consider the China made norinco or the Vepr's.

Finnish Valmet 'sort of' Aks are the best!
Hungarian FEG ones are VERY nice(nice machine work and finish)and very light! I have 2 and of the 11 AK style guns I have owned, I like them best.VERY accurate too with good triggers!
I think the Bulgarians make the best FORGED AK guns, if thats your thing.
The YUGO RPK recievered AKs seem to me the most heavy duty AND very well finished ones, but are heavier than a forged gun! I have 3 ,one an underfolder and one in .308Win.
I have not handled the newer Russian high grade guns, but the earlier (and earliest) guns were pretty crude in finish IMHO.
I guess the Galils are AKs, my .223 was a nice gun but not as nice as a good AR.
I had a Poly 'Legand' Chinese gun, but sold it in 93 for $$$$. It was ok. nicely finished, but not as accurate as a FEG.
I had 2 other Norincos and sold them before I shot them in 1999 along with a couple preban MAADIs-now there was a butt ugly but functional gun!:)

These are pics of my WASR. The WASR is a stamped receiver Romanian AK clone generally regarded to be at the bottom of the quality heap, esp in terms of fit and finish. But mine has been very reliable and surprisingly accurate. It's about to get a TDI furniture upgrade. The folding stocks on both the AKs are from ACE.

Best in terms of???

Ok, I'm going to catch a lot of greif for this, but here goes. I'll start by saying that the VEPRs, Norincos, original Russian, etc, AK's are very well made weapons. They are also getting rather expensive! Kalashnikov designed weapons to be functional FIRST. AKs weren't meant to be pretty, expensive heirlooms, or accurate, although more accuracy would be nice. They just need to go "boom" every time you pull the trigger, which they ALL do exceedingly well. I've never really been the AK type of guy, but rather more accuracy minded. Over the summer, I purchased a new Romanian WASR-10 just because I CAN, but I never expected to fall in love with it. It's UGLY, but it performs as advertised. I have had no trouble whatsoever with mine over the course of ? thousand rounds. Would I hunt deer with it? Eh, probably not...I'll leave that to my Schulnigg or various Remchesters we have around the house. Would I trust my life to it? YOU BETCHA!
I've heard good things about the VEPR's accuracy, so if that's what you're after, check it out. If you're just looking for an AK to do AK-type things, then I wouldn't hesitate checking out the WASRs. Save some money, stockpile ammo! OR, buy 2! One for each hand. :D

Small arms review praised Yugo m70's, saying that there receivers are made like on an RPK, and that they have a high degree of fit and finish. I am going to be getting my first AK soon, and M70's look nice, so if anybody has one please tell me how you like them.

I think Arsenal has base models that go in the $400 to $500 range, but I think you would have to call them.

Wait, that is not the same company I am thinking of. What is the other one in Houston? I see them at the gun shows here. They are in that same price range. They always have guns displayed with very glossy furniture. I hate that.

MTMilitiaman,

Can I get together with you sometime and play with your AKs?? :)

I've been trying to decide if I really need an AK or not but have never shot one.

I wouldn't have a problem with it except I am no longer in Bozeman. I couldn't afford school anymore so I am up in Troy, MT.

Trust me though, you need an AK:

1. It pisses the antis off and they desperately want to ban them.
2. You can get a decent one for under $400, less if you don't care about finish as much as if it goes bang when you pull the trigger. All AKs, as a generaly rule, disregarding three or four decades of neglect somewhere in Africa, do.
3. You can pull the trigger 1000 times for under $150, which is relatively rare among rifles.
4. It's durable, reliable, relatively accurate or enough so to accomplish its intended purpose (Minute-Of-Capitalist @ 300 yards or so), and hell, its fun too.
5. If everything goes Tango Uniform and you need a rifle for serious social encounters, you'll have one.

If you get one and hate it, you can always trade it towards an AR or something else. But you'll never know unless you take the plunge and get one.

MTMilitiaMan,

Those all sound like good reasons to me! :D

I already have an AR I built up last summer. I also have a .308 Saiga that's a real good shooter and a couple of SKSs. I guess I probably do need an AK. It seems the currently available Romanians are pretty good examples of an AK. Tough, reliable, and not particularly refined. Since the price is less than half what it cost to build my AR I guess I could figure a way to purchase one. Thanks for your response.

The all black one above is that model. It is the slr-101 and is no longer in production. I believe I paid right at five bills for mine before the work. Arsenal will have a new production stamped reciever line in 7.62x39 with a more managable price point available soon.

I have had Russian, Hungarian (FEG), East German and Chinese AK47's. I find the best ones are the East German ones. Their are reliable and well finished...

Lets see some pictures of the AK's... I keep thinking I need to get an AR-15, but I really like the caliber and reliability of AK's...

Here is my Romanian SAR1 A lot of people don't care for the Romanian guns but mine has been nothing but fantastic, of course it is not really the same gun anymore.
