Best AK-47?

I;ve heard the East German one is the best one, but have never seen one! I do have a parts kit for one though, and 2 Pebble Plastic stocks which are cool:)

In Finland we have used our own AK variants called RK-62 and RK-95 since 1960's. Its very familiar to all male finns since military service here is obligatory for all men. All the rifles have atleast the accuracy of 3" to 4" inch consistent groups from 150 yards. The later RK-95 designed 30 years after the RK-62 has better ergonomics but due to cost not that many were produced. Finnish AK variants production was completely terminated in 1995 for cost reasons of course..

First thumbnail on this post shows finnish reservist in obligatory refresher somewhere during summer 2003. There is actually a platoon attacking but due to terrain and tactics it was impossible to get more than two men on this picture. Fighters are utilizing a Saab training systems combat simulator.

Second thumbnail is a typical finnish reservist rifle.
Since there are no finnish made RK's on the market today
reservists have to rely on a russian, bulgarian or even chinese models.
With little smithing done to the trigger, new stock and scope one can have all but the accuracy that was typical for the Rk-62/ Rk-95.
Pictured here is a Arsenal Sar-M1, kobra red dot and BR-tuote supressor.

My SLR-101SB

PMbiker, I love the looks of you AK.

My Romanian SAR1 has never failed to go boom when I needed it to. Reliability is good. The stock is too short for me though. Ammo for it is getting expensive & I won't be getting a gun chambered for 7.62x39 unless it's given to me for a while. But I like my SAR1.

I prefer the milled receiver Bulgarian AKs from Arsenal, Inc. They are extremely well made, accurate, and reliable. The milled guns feel a lot more solid than stamped receiver guns. I have an SLR-101SG; it's the same gun as dont_matr's SLR-101SB pictured above, but with green furniture.

I've handled a couple Veprs, shot one. They are very well made but not as well balanced as the Bulgarian SLRs, IMO.

The Russian Saigas are nicely made, solid rifles. If they are converted to have a pistol grip they can make very nice military-style guns. However, make sure that whoever does the conversion knows what he'd doing. I had one converted by Hesse which used soft fire control parts that I needed to replace after about 180 rounds.

Chinese and Romanian AKs generally run fine, but are not as well finished. I've seen examples of both with cockeyed front sight towers and handguards.

Maadi AKs from Egypt are some of the worst made guns I've seen.

I think Arsenal has base models that go in the $400 to $500 range, but I think you would have to call them.

Wait, that is not the same company I am thinking of. What is the other one in Houston?
You are thinking of Armory USA. I have one of theirs and an Arsenal. They are both good guns. Perfectly reliable. My Arsenal gun has the milled receiver and the Armory USA gun has the new heavy duty stamped receiver. Both are made in Bulgaria.

I appreciate the complement V4Vendetta, I really like it too. It was put together during the ban and the amd-65 muzzle brake looked the best. Since the sunsetting of the ban, I've considered having the brake swapped for a flash hider of proper length just because I can.

I have to say the BEST AK is the Israeli Galil. A really class act in every way.

Second is the Finnish Valmet.

I remember about 20 years ago seeing a Velmet in a gunshopt that specialized in "tactical" guns and gear (back in the days when you could still see HK 91s and Uzies on gun store racks). The sales clerk was quite impressed with that gun, and said it was the best combat arm ever made. What makes it so much better than a Bulgie AK-47? More accurate? Couldn't be more reliable.

I've used the following: Vepr, Saiga, Kreb's KTRs, Bulgarians (SLRs and Arsenals), Chinese (Polytechs and Norincos), Vectors, original Zastava Yugos, various parts guns from China, Bulgaria, Poland, East Germany, and others, Galils, and Valmets.

Best AK?

Accurate but heavy, Vepr.

Best overall gun, Tromix converted Saiga. I'll put one of our Tromix guns against any AK from any country or any custom build from any smith. The base Russian gun is excellent, runs around 2 MOA, and Tony can convert them to any configuration that you can imagine.

I'm not a typical AK shooter. I like to use mine in competition as well, and I do pretty good. I've got a lot of rounds through various AKs, and I'm dead serious when I would take a Saiga against anything out there.

Best IMO are Bulgarian Arsenal, Russian VEPR and milled Chinese PolyTech/Norinco.

The worst are usually american rebuilt/re-receivered guns that were done on the cheap like Wasr-10s and Hesse's. It is hard to pinpoint what makes them so bad. Crappy fire control hardware, crappy metal, crappy tolerances during assembly, crappy rivets, crappy heat treatment- who knows? A good gun has everything right, a bad gun could be wrong in any one of a dozen places.

Best bang for the buck right now is Saigas, easily. By a million miles. We are talking an accurate and reliable gun that can be had for 200-300 bucks usually. If you want you can pay Tony Rumore a few hundred bucks to turn it into the ultimate tactical rifle. For 350 or so, he converts it to a real fire control group with a pistol grip and an ace folder. Saigas are available in 5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, 30-06, 9x54R, 12 ga, 20 ga and a few other calibers I have forgotten.

I only have experience with a few types of AKs but so far my Yugo M70AB has been very good. Sights shoot to point of aim right out of the box and more accurate than the other AKs I have tried. I own a couple of SAR-1s as well and I had a nice SAR-2 that was pretty accurate. The Yugo is nicer than even the very best Romanian AKs I have seen by far. The finish is well done and the overall quality is right on.

You can get a Yugo for about $500 or less so they may worth a look.
