Best Caliber That Never Took-off

5mm mag
257 weatherby mag
257 roberts
35 rem
264 win mag
8mm rem mag

All 6 of these are extremely effective calibers. In most cases they are superior to a lot of the calibers that did remain in production. It is a shame that a lot of great ones have been let go by the manufactures. :cuss:

Just a comment: I think the reason many of that calibers that took off is because they are made from readily available, common, military caliber brass.

One of the greatest that never took off (and an exception on the brass) is the .257 Roberts. Bullets from 60grn. to 120 grn. With the right bullets, from varmints to Elk.

Hogdon shows velocities to 3050fps with Hybrid 100 V and the 115 grn. Barnes X.I've seen loads to 3800fps with the 60grn. bullet.

The Roberts has low recoil and can be used in short .308 Win length actions. It was once available in the Browning BLR short action.

If a bullet manufacturer would make a VLD bullet in 120grn, I think this might be a great 1000yd.cartridge.

The 7x57 Mauser though it is not obscure I don't think any rifles are produced in that caliber anymore, and most of them out there were old Chiliean or Spanish war rifles.

.256 Winchester.. yeck of a carbine round

.38 super...... Can be loaded to romp and very accurate.. still most popular caliber in Mexico. (can;t own any caliber that was ever adopted as Military.

.327 Mag and the .32 H&R Mag... bad LITTLE dudes..

11mm French Grauss... had one many years ago, try and find ammo for that sucker, when you did it was paper patch and worth as much as the gun. Was a POS weapon, ballistics short of a softball, and a trigger pull like the hatcfh on a Sherman Tank...

22 Hornet... Very Popular in the day, but eclipsed by newer rounds.. still a good little round.

408 Chey-Tac... hear that there is much interest in the Military Sniping community

22-6mm... wildcat loaded with heavy VLD's and 1-7 twist unbelievably flat long distance round.. few prairie dog hunters were playing with them some time back..

6mm Rem, Gosh I loved the one I had years ago... My ex liked it too, lost in a devorce.

7X61 Sharp & Hart... forerunner of the 7mm Mag. great round.

16 and 28 Ga. shotguns... miss em... and remember Wanda Plastic Shot Shells?

and just being down right silly....

6mm Earsplittinloudenboomer........ some wildcatters attempt (along with the 22 by same name) to push 6000 fps out of a rifle... I don't remember what case it was based upon, remember reading about it in a P.O. Ackley book, have to look it up when I get home..

I don't remember if I've already mentioned it but the 300 Mashburn Magnum was an interesting cartridge. One of the fastest .30 caliber rifle I ever had. After fire forming A .300 Winchester or .300 H&H I loaded it with 90 grains of 4831 with a 180 Nosler partition bullet. After getting one moose with it I reduced the load a good bit because the 90gr. load that was recommended to me when I bought the rifle caused a lot of bloodshot meat. Never had a chronograph around to check it but that thing sure was flat shooting.

I had a model 88 Winchester lever in a .284 in the 60s and 70s. Got several caribou with it. I y liked the rifle but it was a PIA in -20F or greater, no matter what I did it was so hard to operate the lever in the cold that I finally sold the rifle. With its short throw lever it had such a mechanical disadvantage that one nearly needed a hammer to close the action. In warmer weather it worked well. The .284 was a good flat shooting cartridge but the Model 88 only held four of them while the .308 version held five in it's magazine.

.50 gi

end of all discussions about .40 and .45

Either that or .40 becomes the new 9mm and .45 becomes the new .40. :)

6.5 Grendel:banghead:

Yeah, it's frustrating because I think it would go a long way in addressing just about every issue with the current military rifle/carbine ammo, and maybe even a few more, as opposed to just some of them. :( .280 British would have been quite suitable as well, I think.

I'll also vote for the 358 Win., 35 Whelan ...and add the 358 Norma Mag.
I'll also throw in the 6.5x54 Mannlicher and 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

I've shot all but the 35 Whelan and really enjoyed them for hunting.

I agree with Cop Bob that the .256 win. mag is a yeck round even though my lever and a large holed 75 gr. HP took a 60 yard 100 pound doe. .22 long snapper in a converted Ruger ssm in 5.5 inch is faster than a .22 mag rifle. Not good enough.

all of the Lee Jurres designed pistols .357, .41, and .44, all named automag, brass was made from cut down .308, and all shot very well. Very good big game pistol rounds. Also the .264 win mag, great round, but hard on barrel life if loaded to the upper end.

6.5 Remington Magnum. Very sensible idea, to my thinking, but maybe I was the only one who thought so. Good sectional density at a reasonable throw weight is a strong point of the 6.5 bore size and making the bullet go fast is a pretty good idea. But wadda I know?

Best Calibers that never took off

Man I am getting old! My first cernterfire rifle was a model 722 in .257 Roberts. My dad used a model 71 Winchester (.348 for you youngsters) for bursh hunting elk and bear; and a hunting buddy who owned a gun store absolutely loved his .30-40 Krag. Rifles are very different from handguns with respect to the variety of cartridges that have about the same performance. Handguns, 9mm. .38, 40 and 45 all fill a niche with respect to capacity, recoil and perceived effectiveness. Rifle? How many 22 caliber centerfires, 6mm centerfires, 30 caliber(including 7mm) many of which produce the same ballistics with the same weight bullet. Funny thing, my dad was so impressed with my 257 that he had one built. Mauser action , fajen stock, douglas barrell, long throated for more zip. Never did shoot as well as my 722.
