This whole thread reminds me of the Pat McManus story he wrote about his older cousin who was always trying to impress him with his woods knowledge -- especially discovering fresh deer "sign" (droppings).
Any time Pat pointed "sign" that he'd discovered, his cousin would holler dismissively, "Well, you can't EAT 'sign!'"
Until the day Pat brought along a pocket full of chocolate-covered raisins and deposited them in the middle of a trail, and then called his cousin over to see the "sign" he'd found.
"You can't EAT 'sign!'" And then Pat did.
