Ok guys this year for Xmas I am looking into getting my dad some carry ammo for his glock 23 so for y'all who have one what do you recomend

Yes Colt I understand that but when it comes time for him to open it up I wanna be able to say I really thought this out and I have researched it and here are the reasons why I got this not oh here any old ammo will work :fire: :cuss: :banghead:

Ok...Buy a box, then Google the maker's website, read their propaganda and regurgitate it. That should work as well as a bunch of internet stranger's opinions.:D...FWIW, I have carried Gold Dot in my duty Glock for nearly 15 years. I cannot testify to it's effectiveness since I haven't fired in in defense.

Frankly "Colt" is wrong. There are some "defensive" loads out there for many handgun calibers that you won't find in any of my guns, for reasons such as under/over penetration etc. etc.

But like others have said, Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST are hard to beat. I think 165 gr. is an ideal weight for the .40 S&W. Might I recommend TNoutdoors9 on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE8F6382529FB5C51

This is a playlist of all the ballistic gel test he has for the .40 cartridge. You might be able to deduct a good offering from there. I would recommend the Federal HST line, it's what's in my Glock 19. Specifically 147 grain standard pressure, 9mm obviously.

Hope this helped.

Black Hills .40 S&W 140 grain Barnes TAC-XP load, this is a JHP load produced using all-copper bullets - no lead at all. These bullets won't come apart when they expand - that's a good thing - as a lot of JHP bullets come completely apart when they begin to expand and/or hit bone. The Barnes TAC-XP bullet won't come apart. The ballistics are excellent; this round comes out of a Glock 23 at around 1,100 FPS - and the recoil isn't too bad, either. One estimate is that these bullets are penetrating at least 25% deeper than conventional JHPs do - and once again, the bullet stays together.

Agreed. To take an extreme example, you could go to Wal-Mart and get the WWB "defensive" ammo, but is not going to stack up to something like a Gold Dot.

These days there are a bunch of companies putting out really good products.
The big ones being:
Winchester Ranger T, Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST

I don't think anyone could go wrong with those.
Personally, I kinda like Hornady's Critical Duty line (NOT Critical Defense).
Given that it's winter time, there is something to be said for a round where you know the cavity won't get clogged by clothing. Based on everything I've seen and read it performs as well as the big three mentioned above, but without the risk of clogging. Win/win?

Ultimately though, I can kind of see Colt's point. I would not go so far as to say that any defensive ammo is the best, but I would say that once you whittle it down to the top half-dozen choices, you're not gonna go wrong either way.

A good performing JHP if your pistol will feed it is the 180 Gr.JHP Rem . UMC. In my Glock 23 ,I had a few hang ups on chambering until my pistol wore in. Now it feeds and expands well with good penetration. Another is Fed. HST. or the Gold Dot JHPs. I like the 180 Gr. weight as they are pretty much POI for my Glock 23 gen 3. Another is the Hornady 180 Gr. XTP JHP . It seems to give slightly better accuracy at most distances ,though your pistol may shoot better with a different load.

Hst.gold dot or golden sabber bonded.
Check out wwb 180 gr.hollow point on the net they expand very well for about 21 bucks for 50. I just picked up a box myself

Personally I would go to a place like SGammo and buy a couple of 50 round boxes of:

Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST or Winchester Ranger T 165gr or 180 gr.

You can buy the 50 round boxes for about the same price as the 20 round boxes.

Personally, for a cc weapon, i'd stick with something less exotic than an all copper bullet and go with something used regularly by LE. The last thing one would want after a self defense shooting is some prosecutor trying to play up your "super lethal copper bullets which you carry because you're blood thirsty". Speer gold dot is a good choice.

The best one is the one you can find on a shelf for sale, and can afford to practice with.

There Is No Magic Bullet.

Only good shot placement.

I get Win PDX1 Defender bonded JHPs off the shelf in .40 & .45 and this is really good stuff, I like the .45 a bit better in my Glock 21 compared to the same ammo in .40 in my Glock 22. I have some Black Hills JHP +P ammo in 9mm and I like these best of all in my Glock 17. You really can't go wrong with Black Hills defensive ammo!

So you think a center chest shot with a 9mm FMJ is just as effective as a center chest hit with a premium JHP?

Might work better if said hollowpoint stops before hitting spine and FMJ damages it.
There are no magic bullets;)

Look for the YouTube testing of the Buffalo Barnes 125 grain copper bullet if you want to see something to talk about. The copper bullet is shaking up the modern JHP world in a good way.

I never said there was a magic bullet I just said that I am looking for ideas for a good mordern hollow point

Most modern SD ammo from the major makers is designed with the FBI protocol in mind so it all performs to similar standards. Look to see what one of the online dealers like ammunitiontogo.com or sgammo.com has in the way of law enforcement boxed ammo that way you can get him enough so that he can shoot some and check function and POI.

Thats not close to what he means and you know it.

A "center chest shot" with a 9mm FMJ beats a miss with a .50 bmg.
A "center chest shot" with a 9mm FMJ beats a premium JHP hit to the buttocks.
A "center chest shot" with a 9mm FMJ beats a premium JHP hit to the bicep.
A "center chest shot" with a 9mm FMJ beats a premium JHP hit to the shoulder.
