Best New Gun for around 300$?

I just got a 300 gift card for a local gun shop and I am thinking of how to make the most of it. They sell mostly new high end guns, I could probably add about 100 more to the card. It's a hassle to get to range where I can shoot center fire ammo so center fire long guns are out
possibly a single action handgun ( something I have yet to shoot )
So I welcome ideas. Keep in mind I'm in CA so that rules out some things.
So far I am considering the Marlin 70 papoose, the Henry Ar 7, or the Stoeger SA 45long colt/ 45 acp.
What do you think is best gun you can get for around 300?

$300 is a substantial down-payment

Remember that a rifle requires a scope of equal or more $$$. A decent .22 LR pistol costs $400 plus. Save up before using your coupon on something you'll later regret. $300, now-a-days isn't enough to buy any decent firearm, pistol or rifle. Inflation is the problem in 2008. cliffy

Screw it. A Ruger 10/22 and a decent scope for it.

Now for the true trick... pay attention...

Hunt around for THE Ruger 10/22... Haunt gunbroker, etc., and get a heavy barreled rifle... Of course, if you have to spend the bux on THEIR stuff, heck... $300? Ruger 10/22, and a few toys... Winchester 1894, maybe a little tweakage. Low-rent "starter" M1911 (kinda like my Norinco.. Which doesn't fail to feed).

Lots and lots of good values are out there, depending on your likes and taste. The Walther SP22 is a heck of a fine .22 target pistol, for example, and you can get them in that price range. I picked one up a few months back and have had a heck of a fine time with it at the gun range.

$300, with a possible hundred bucks more. You haven't really told us what type of shooting you like to do.

Skip the AR-7, you'd likely regret getting it.

Problem is, he more than likely HAS to use THAT gun shop. The prices at THAT GUN SHOP may be inflated.

So, what others have gotten in the way of "good deals" I'm sure this person won't have that luxury.

I agree, forget the AR-7. Had one, hated it. Traded it towards a Papoose, which has worked well for me. Get a good but not too good 4x scope, a spare magazine, and you're good.

If it was me---a bersa thunder.

If you don't have a shotgun, get a nice pump action Remington or Mossberg.

Hard to beat a nice .22lr for pure fun though.

How about hipoint carbine in 40 caliber, some extra mags, and have $50-100 left over for ammo.

If you can get an FFL to handle the transfer, consider a Stoeger 8000. Same as the old Beretta 8000 Cougar since Beretta owns Stoeger. Find one on GunBroker for around $350-375.

Get a Handi rifle if they have one. You can interchange barrels and calibers with it later on down the line

i love my ar7 its not a serious gun though it just depends upon what you want to use it for mine loves cci stingers accurate at50yrds with a scope

my marlin 700 22lr no scope never needed one. and it is soooo accurate

for $300 you could buy two of them and a few boxes of bullets the 500 count packs

+1 for CZ rimfires. Go for iron sights, it is a lot of fun. The 452 Lux is proably the most accurate but I like the FS. Either way you can't go wrong.
