as much as i'd love a Kar98k, the prices of those have skyrocketed and just aren't in my budget right now... but i would settle for one of the close copies like a Czech Vz. 24, or a Yugo, or maybe even a turkish... i just want to know what is the best option...

a Springfield 1903 is more a Mauser than a VZ58 is an AK 47, but that's still a pretty good comparison.

Being as how the 1903 is pretty much a direct copy of the Mauser, and it's American made and very high quality, it probaby is the best.

I am very favorably impressed with the quality and performance of my yugo 24/47. Hard to say if it is an original belgium construct or made in Serbia but from what folks say it doesn't really matter, it is FN through and through. So far it is the best gun deal I ever got, All matching numbers, pristine bore, freshly rearsenaled still in cosmoline for $100. I did have to do some work and refinishing on the stock to make it really pretty.

Best non-German Mauser....

I,ve had turks,an old yugo But the best one I have now is a Yugo M-48 Mitchells Mauser.I even got it fo free when my best friends Dad Died not to long ago.I shoots My handloads only no-corrosive primer's ect..I paid for the 2 piece base for a long scope and it shoot's great.I wish I could still hunt cause I'd be taking that out for Deer an Bigger Game. Now I just have fun making loads up and seeing how they hit paper.Alot of people complain about Mitchells But Mine was free and if I had to I'd buy one of them I do it Now.

i like my turk mauser a lot. it's big and heavy but it shoots really nice

plunge is right about turkish mausers. They ARE german mausers. I had one that had been converted to 8mm that had a notch in the receiver for spent shell clearance. That was kind of funky but the action was just so damn silky smooth and it shot very well. Ended up selling it to an old smith at a gun show that makes custom hunting rifles.

Do a little research and get one that is K98 compatible so it is easier to build and accessorize.

The various Yugo Mausers may be what you are looking for. The Mod98 Yugo capture Mausers are generally far superior to any RC Mauser you well see and the prices are cheap in comparison. Any of the M48 model Yugo's can be found in near new condition at bargain prices, these are a intermediate size action, 1/4 inch shorter.

A pair of M48's and a M24/52C, all under $200 each off Gunbroker. They have been cleaned up but you can see they can be found in nice condition.

Another Gunbroker buy, this M1924 has all original parts and furniture. This one ran around $300 with the bayonet.

This Yugo capture Mod98 came from Gunbroker for $165. Retains most of the Nazi markings and has a near new barrel.

I have been collecting Mausers for quite a few years. The most accurate Mausers I own are the Czech M98/22's. They are quite long but the action is typical of the Czech rifles - very smooth with a great trigger. I have had 4 of them and all were 1.5 MOA or better. Typically, my Mausers are 3-4 MOA rifles. Many of the 98/22s were made for the Turks so it is not usual to see Arabic numerals on the rear sight. The most I ever paid for a M98/22 was $105 (last one I bought 2 years ago). Outside of 8mm, the Swedish Mausers are similiar in accuracy and are generally in pretty good condition.

The various models of the Swedish Mausers are the best of the non-German rifles, but they certainly aren't any cheaper, anymore.

In terms of accuracy, fit-and-finish, what?

Overall, probably the 98/29 Persian Contract rifles made by CZ, followed by the Swedes. But you have to remember, most Mausers were made by Germany, so you're excluding a huge portion of the Mauser family tree.

And if you want a decent shooting commonly-available-wholesale model, just get a refurbed or unissued Yugo M48.

I second the BRNO VZ-24 as the best non-German made 98 pattern. The best of these are probably the Persian contract models, which are usually 99% mint.

Depends on what you want. I personally favor the small ring Mausers, love the Swede and Spanish guns. I paid $125 for my M93 7x57, and it's one of the nicest shooting milsurps I own. Same for the M96 Swede.

I've been very, very happy with my Yugo M24/47. It cost my $200 but was basically a brand new rifle (due to the rearsenaling these rifles went through in the 40s). It doesn't seem to be lacking in any deparment I can think of (history, accuracy, fit/finish) and it's a real looker to boot. I think in general, you're going to be pretty happy with most Mausers. You just have to figure out what you want to spend and what round you want to shoot.

The F.A.M.P. Argentine 1909s are some of the best M98s made anywhere. Latin contract M98s particularly the Mexican 1912 made in Steyr,Austria are great too.

I'll agree with JimmyRay ... I just had my M1909 out for a date this afternoon and was pleased that it is FAR more accurate than I am with 66 year old eyes. Still and all ... certainly one of my favorites:D

Really? Basically a small ring pre 98 mauser with a two piece firing pin, half a$$ed third lug, and less than stellar cone breeching. In all reality, we infringed upon Mausers patents while attempting to modernize the krag. Check out the SA experimental rifles of 1900,01, and 02.

Legend has it that WWI is what stopped the trademark infringement lawsuit by Mauser against Springfield.
