7mm, because it encompasses the 7mm-08, the 7x57, 7x61, 7x64, 280 Remington, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm STW, etc.

The others only cover one catridge, why have one when you can do everything? (Sure that's not the way you meant to write the poll, but that's the way it came out).

7x57 would be my choice for a one-size fits all rifle. After that, .30-06, .308, and .270. 35 Whelen would also be a solid choice.

Luckily, that list contains the "best" rifle cartridge in my opinion, the .30-06 Springfield.

It's versatile, common, fun to shoot... just an all-around good cartridge, in my opinion.

The best caliber is 30. I don't care which 30 caliber you care to shoot, but the best CALIBER, 30.:p

.22 LR because it is suitable for everything from jack rabbits to large African game like elephant and rhino.

Sort of a pretty open question as in best caliber for what?

22-250. From prairie dogs at 500 yards to mule deer, your set!

But I'm a sucker for any short action. I love my 308 for deer hunting in the wind and beyond 250 yards. Though in a calm breeze and inside 250 that 22-250 with a Barnes flat smokes deer! Haters gunna hate but I say let em!

Also getting a lot of respect for my wife's 243! What a neat versatile cartridge! Oh man its hell on prairie dogs!

.25-06 . Can take up to elk with the right bullet and shot placement and is great for those who are recoil shy.

You almost got it right. The best caliber is a 6mm. Now there are a lot of 6mm's but my favorite is 243 Winchester. Many would say 6.5 or 6.8 or 257 or the 25-08 or 6mmBR or .......................

Like I said the best is a 6mm of one kind or another.

I chose other. The reason is, I think it depends on what you are using it for. If you are wanting the overall best rifle caliber I would say .260 rem.

I'm going to pick a cartridge first. To me it's the 22 lr hands down. It covers about 90% of all the shooting I do.

Best caliber is really hard to say. .277 kinda fit the mood I'm in at the moment but .308 really does win by default.

I like the .308, I just wish I could go back in time and re-evaluate why I settled on it as my go-to deer getter. I love the round, it hammers the game i hunt as far as i can shoot. Bu one of my primary reasons for choosing it was availability. I figured with all the military arms chambered for it, I would always be able to find ammo. Bulk even. What a joke that's turned out to be.......

Even though I do not have one currently, it would have to be the 30.06 because if I could have only one rifle, I could load cartridges for any game in North America from 55 gr. to 220 gr. encompassing everything I could ever want to shoot!

Other: 243. Flat-shooting cartridges available. Can hunt deer or varmints depending on bullet weight. Light recoil for girly men, women, and boys.

6.5x55 SM because of possible accuracy, versatility and minimal recoil.

From your list, I would choose 30-06 reluctantly, because although it is hands down The American cartridge, I wish that title still belonged to the 30-30...
