Which state is best in terms of gun laws favorable to gun owners? And more specifically, what laws and freedoms make certain states stand out as best?

Alaska - plenty of room to find spots where no one is around to enforce the laws even if they were there, or if they cared. VT style CCW. Class III (IIRC). What's not to love? Unless of course you happen to prefer warm weather ;)

Edit: Plus WildICanGetYouThatAlaska is there to help out :D

I'd vote for Vermont so far. See how many other states have 'Vermont' carry laws. I'm not sure about Class III or NFA regulated firearms/accessories.

The down side is that visiting 3-6 gun shops is probably going to take you a little longer than most states.

Plenty of open space to shoot. Gun clubs are usually very inexpensive $50 or less per year.

One down side is a lack of indoor ranges.

I'll vote for Oklahoma.Good state rifle association, great clubs in the Tulsa area and a good carry law.Lots of public hunting land too.Hard to believe that moving north one state would change all that.......

I'll put in another vote for Alaska. :D On top of what Black Snowman and Gun Runners Alaska said, we have some of if no the best hunting and fishing in the world. :neener:

The Black Snowman pretty well said it all, except for the part about Wild Alaska ........gotcha Ken.

For committing lese majeste Walt, ya get no repairs for one week, and no Glocks for two....:neener: :neener:

That'll teach ya....

Don't know if it's the best state for gun owners, but florida is alot better than many.

You're right, so why do Floridians keep electing these anti-gun Senators? (Graham and Nelson voted FOR the AWB extension on 1805, both have a history of anti-gun votes).

Texas, aside from the major cities. It's a cultural thing. Even the Democrats here carry, and Democratic candidates for state office always take pains to let people know they hunt.

And yes, I know--officially, we no longer have open carry. But from what I hear, that ain't enforced out in west Texas or even here in Williamson County.

East of the Mississippi....

I'd say PA, or perhaps Vermont, which has the honor of having the shortest law listing on the NRA site.

PA has:

Very friendly Shall issue & ccw policies, open carry outside of big cities, Class III, no AWB, other regs are pretty reasonable.

The cultural support probably isn't as strong as Texas, but it's up there.

But hush, don't tell anybody ;)

Of the places I have lived, I think AZ was the best.

CA-Bad
MA-Worse
VA-Not bad
NY-Bad
TX-Pretty good
GA-Pretty good

I'm sure there are better, only really know the ones I've spent time in though.

I enjoy the fact that here in TX I can still find many cool guns for sale by other collectors at shows, pay for them and out I go!

A lot of people want to claim that their state is best, but in all honesty, as a native Texan, I have to say that Alaska probably is the best state for gun owners.

New Hampshire, Vermont, and Alaska are probably the top 3. I would argue that New Hampshire is the best if you take ALL gun laws into consideration. If NH gets Alaska carry, it will be the best gun state. Even though NH currently requires a permit, you can carry more places than you can in Alaska or Vermont. I'd rather pay 10 bucks for NH carry and be able to carry in schools rather than nothing for Vermont and no carry in schools. Pennsylvania has one of the best carry laws (not better than NH), but they have some stupid restrictions on things like private gun transfers.

Florida and Texas are generally good gun states, but their carry laws could use a lot of work. They are too expensive with too many places you can't carry. Arizona's permit isn't that expensive, but there are still a bunch of places where you can't carry.

Anyway, my vote for best state as far as guns are concerned is New Hampshire. Go to packing.org and nraila.org and compare any other state laws to NH and NH will have them beat ESPECIALLY if they go alaska carry. Every state will always have some restriction that NH does not have.

Live free or die!

I think it's great that these states are adapting more a free carry policy

In terms of my two states that I have experience in

CA-night
and
AK-day

:D

I gotta agree with NRA ninja and the reasons he gave plus add into the mix that we are a shall issue state $10.00 for 4 years for permit.

Plus the icing on the cake.

NH is the home of Sturm Ruger, Thompson Centerfire Arms and Sig Arms.

NH has no state income tax

NH has no sales tax

NH has lowest state and local tax burden in the continental U.S.

NH has second-lowest level of dependence on federal spending in the U.S

NH has a true citizen legislature where state house representatives have not raised their $100 per year salary since 1889

NH has the lowest crime levels in the U.S.

NH has no helmet laws or seat belt laws and auto insurance is not compulsory

Our state motto is "Live Free or Die"

Tam, Williamson County is the LAST place I would try to do anything like that. Georgetown Police aren't bad at all, but you do NOT want to give Williamson County Sheriff's Office any excuse to haul your butt in... They will do it at the drop of a hat, or in the case of the previous Sheriff, the drop of the pants.... :p
